I thought Jap was an abbreviation and Nip was the slur.

Find a Japanese/English site and go ask them.

I'll just assume everything is a slur, Canuck.

Probably varies by region. It's a slur in the US, but might not be one in, I dunno, Australia.

Wouldn't the Japanese be the best judge of whether or not it is a slur?

Not a slur. Equivalent of "Yank".

They aren't politically correct enough, so their opinion doesn't count.

Are you saying that if Japanese people living in Japan aren't offended by the word Jap and that it's not used as a slur against them, but Japanese-American people living in the US are offended by the word and that it's used as a slur against them, then the word Jap somehow isn't a slur? Because that's retarded.

Good point in general but in this case we are talking about Japanese living in Japan are we not?

Seeing as how no Japanese people are reading this forum to the best of my knowledge, I think the better question is whether the word was intended as a slur.

What about "limey"? How well does that go over?

I'm not trying to be offensive. Is it like "Canuck"?

You can't really insult the British with any kind of attempted slur.

We are so confident in our superiority it just amuses us.

Brit is equivalent to Canuck. I think Limey is more like Moose****er or something along those lines.

If someone called me a Limey I'd ask them what it was like in the war.

Wikipedia says that the Japanese (the ones living in Japan, that is) don't care of they're called Japs. Probably too distracted by used schoolgirls' panties to take offense at any implied insult from the attempted slur.
