    Loin -

Ahh. That would be rude I think.

I accept your point on intentions Loin (twice now actually).

We had a politician find himself in trouble when he referred to "Orientals" recently. His intention was good (his comments were positive) but he got ass raped for using the term.

What's wrong with Oriental? Its more accurate than just saying "Asian" (since that includes everything from Russians to Indians to Iraquies), and shorter than East Asian.

Was it ever used as a slur or is just due to the general tendency to taboo archaic words for ethnicities?
Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.
The simple suggestion of a true change scandalizes and terrifies modern man. -Nicolás Gómez Dávila

I don't know. As with the politician in question, I missed the memo.

It exemplifies that intent, although important, isn't the only factor in considering if something is a slur. Just because I don't know a particular term is offensive doesn't necessarily make it okay to use.

Some civil servant in the US was fired a few years ago for using the word "niggardly," even though it has no relation at all to the word "******" (different root words; I think they even have different root languages). He had no intent to use a slur, and in fact he didn't use a slur, but everybody decided that the word he used sounded close enough to sounding slur-like that he lost his job.

Oriental is no more specific than "Asian". You do realize Oriental originally meant Arab, Persian, Turk, etc., right?

Why do you think these are still regularly called 'Oriental Rugs'?

Wait so EvC earlier posted asking about animated pornography being imported to the US from Japan and now he notes how he gave 1/4 of his income to Japan... That could be a lot of cartoon porn.

I donated £1...so that is probably more than you donated

Hang on, don't the Japanese have plenty of money already to take care of this and are just f**king it up...I get the impression that money isn't really going to help, more organisation.
