The fact that Japan is the world's third largest economy, the 23rd wealthiest nation per capita, and has long paraded itself as the world's most earthquake- prepared nation should, in no way, be taken as any barrier to showering them with all your spare change.

I chose this to give to (red cross btw) I'm betting (not wanting) on a the worst case scenario. I'm not always a philantrapist, i don't have the money nor dedication to be so, but this strikes me as an entire nation/culture at the brink of extinction. Wish more of you would care... 140 milion radioactive people dying sounds like a good enough cause i thought....

Greenpeace, who are in the business of overestimating the severity of nuclear accidents, put the death toll of Chernobyl (which was a level 7 nuclear accident, whereas Fukushima is a level 5 nuclear accident) at 140,000, and that was with the Soviets not accepting outside help and not being able to evacuate anybody in time. You're overestimating the severity of the problem by at least three orders of magnitude, and probably by closer to six or seven orders of magnitude.

Greenpeace: Guantanamo Bay has a nice spot for them.

And on top of that I'm wiling to bet well prepared countries will use aid more efficiently than say a place like Somalia.

I thought you were in the camp that the market is always smartest? Are you saying the market missed something in this case?

                              a) I was gambling

                              however,

                              b) I'm pretty sure that this situation is so unusual (especially to active market participants) that there was a higher chance of there being a misreading of the probability of absolute disaster than reasonable.

                                But yes, good call

(Up to this point at least.)

Why did you go with an ETF for an option though? If you really were sure wouldn't something with a bit more granularity and potential volatility (in extent) (and perhaps less invested) make more sense?
