When a child insults me I assume that (s)he probably doesn't know any better and so I gently rebuke them if it's my place to do so; with an adult I assume that they're competent enough to understand that insults are out of line. In the context of an online forum, I assume that the insulting adult poster is probably too stupid and/or callous to bother having a discussion with. You're falling in that category if you have not already done so. Would you rather stand in the corner for an hour with a dunce cap, or what?

Fair enough. I was being serious about being legitimately puzzled over why anybody would waste resources on curing the common cold - it kills what, a hundred people a year? Two hundred? Compared with diseases like malaria, it's just not worth considering.
