      • My understanding of the marines is they are a separate branch capable of forcible entry from the air, land, and sea and are the only branch to use amphibious warfare.
The Army has paratroopers but no amphibious units( I know of ).

There needs to be three services:
          GROUND forces.
          AIR forces.
          NAVAL forces.

Airplanes belong in the AIR FORCES.
Soldiers on the ground belong in the GROUND FORCES.
Ships belong in the NAVAL FORCES.

It's that simple. You can have specialty units in each if you so choose. But to give them their own service is just retarded and pointless overhead.
Would the planes in the navy be air force then?

I agree, the marines are first in, to hold the line then the army will move in for occupation.

            • A single combined military in the US would be a great way to save a bunch of money and probably produce a better military overall if the current bunch of professional soldiers in our military would go along with it and put all their "traditional" crap behind them.

As it is, the current structure encourages rivalries instead of cooperation. This is not a good thing when it comes to weapons acquisition, overall command structure, or proper use of actual forces. The savings alone from removing a bunch of the bureaucracy would make it worth doing.

                • Putting aside the usual trolling by the usual suspects, it could be argued that a single command structure would solve some pretty big problems faced by the military as ming stated above. It won't happen in this country though for the simple fact that tradition and political forces would not allow it.

                  • Glad to see everyone here agrees. Canada's military is the model to follow.
