  • How is breaking quorum worse? It's harder to do because you have to actually leave the state. We would have less filibustering if the senators had to go to Canada.

It's worse because it shuts down the entire legislature in addition to being plainly undemocratic. Filibusters, as they are used in practice, only mean that you need 60 votes to pass legislation instead of 50, which provides a nice check on the majority. That check on the majority is fairly unimportant in state governments, where gridlock is unnecessary to prevent things like dictatorships. The federal government provides that check.

      • I don't see how it's "undemocratic" for the majority party to not get 100% of what it wants. Just because someone is in the minority doesn't mean their voice should become irrelevant.

There was no budget crisis in Wisconsin until Walker came along and dished out tax cuts to big business. He's using the very problem he created as justification for screwing over working people.

Reagan began 1983 with a 35% approval rating.

Obama's approval ratings are well in line with other presidents who went on to win reelection easily. It's simply stupid to rely on approval ratings this far ahead of an election as an indicator of how it will turn out. Ask Bush Sr.

Of course he's blaming the problem he caused on unions. Why would Republicans take personal responsibility?

Actually, this is how it is in the U.S. Senate, where a single Senator can use a "Secret Hold" to stall almost any legislation he wants.

If you're going to whine about convoluted systems of arcane procedural rules thwarting progress, no state legislature holds a candle to Congress.

Like it or not, Ohio is probably a must-win for the Republicans.
