So far as I recall you can't reclaim the VAT but can claim depreciation on the total cost of the laptop (including VAT) as deductions against your income tax.

I thought you were claiming VAT on sales at a fixed reduced rate (Flat rate VAT scheme), and so didn't reclaim VAT on individual purchases.Originally posted by Provost Harrison View Post

No, I am not doing that because in the end I am invoicing to Germany and thus there is no VAT charge. Would be silly to have flat rate VAT payment when I never charge VAT to my principle client
So it is the normal route.
For flat rate VAT you can claim back the VAT on capital expenditures in excess of 2000. My laptop didn't cost that much anyway...Speaking of Erith:
