  • Recommend Provost a New Laptop

Well guys, as an upshot of going self employed, I will need to buy my own laptop - my first business expense.

Now I work in IT so I need something that isn't too stupidly large but I need stuff like a decent screen.

But it will also be my main entertainment centre when travelling and would like something with a bit of muscle too.

The laptop needs to be pretty sturdy as it will be carried around *a lot*.

I must admit that I've become a bit out of touch with the technology in the past few years as I have been provided with laptops and not had to buy my own system.

I don't want to go too stupid on money, but the budget is still quite large...about £1000 although I am not fixed on that.

So come on nerds, what do you reckon?

You could get 3 or 4 ipads and stitch them together.

Get a Macbook and make sure to plaster stickers of your favorite band/coffee house all over the laptop's cover.

Get one of those Dells that convert into a tablet. Sure, you'll probably never use the feature, but it will impress the hell out of clients.

If I would buy a new laptop right now, it would be the Toshiba R630-13V. It's the perfect mixture of power and mobility. I travel a lot, which makes that important. Besides, Sony and Toshiba are the only ones with proper international warranty and support. It doesn't matter if you are in Hong Kong, Sydney, Morecambe, or New Jersey: they will fix it on the spot if they can. Sony has a bad/slow supply chain and is overpriced.

I'm keeping my old Toshiba while it's still operational though. It's the ancestor of the model named above. Five years and counting.

Thank you Z for your advice, quite useful in fact.

The rest of you here, as per usual, have been utterly useless

Avoid Acer - warrenty sucks. If anything goes wrong - you send it to Texas for a nice long vacation.
