Okay this is why Heraclitus needs to pause before posting stuff. He gave absolutely no explanation as to what the second chart meant. I had to figure out that it was describing fertility rates and clearly some people (like Asher) were a bit confused. Seriously, Hera, no caption or anything? Just put a chart up and expect everyone to know how your mind works?

Completely misunderstood your comment, I tought you where talking about how secular it was.

Disparaging the US because of its near religiosity seemed more like something you would say in the thread than disparaging it on having slightly above replacemenet fertility (BTW why is slow population growth in the US a bad thing?) and I just skimmed the posts here.

Italy, Austria and Germany where meant to be given as places where people according to the first map put as much or more importance on religion and are considered part of the developed world.

It actually does.

The first and second chart have significant overlap especially in the most extreme examples. The most religious societeis all have above average fertility on a already large population base, most of them spectacularly so (Egypt seems the lower bound).

Actually it is kind of ironic that bc1871 reveres the monarchy of a country that is one of the least religious in the world with that post.

I can't wait for religion to evaporate. Hopefully if we manage to get better standards of education throughout the world this will accelerate. Religion is a tool to manipulate the uneducated and vulnerable.
