"I have nothing against Wilson, but he's nowhere near the same calibre of QB as Flutie. Flutie threw for 5k+ yards in the CFL." -Ben Kenobi
And yet I don't know who they are and have never heard their songs. People I know who I asked were equally as unfamiliar with them.

This is because you live in a ****ing cave with other troglodytes. You and the people you know are ignoramuses who have chosen to segregate themselves from the rest of the developed world.
There's a whole big world outside your **** little neighborhood. Explore it sometime.
And if I asked some of my neighbors who, say, the Temptations were, many of them would blink and say "wha?" This means nothing except that I live in a neighborhood with negligible appreciation for that kind of music.

EXACTLY!!!!!
All this talk about me being ignorant and stupid and calling people troglodytes, all this ****... it's about cultural exposure. Not many people round here listen to rock music, let alone some classic rock or whatever Led Zeppelin is. My mother is in her 50's and she didn't listen to Led Zeppelin. I wasn't exposed to this.

ignorance is associated with a general lack of cultural exposure...

Lucky people.

"Capitalism ho!"
Yeah, but I think my neighbors really ought to know who the Temptations are/were, and FFS you ought to know Led Zeppelin. Just so we get most of it out at once, please identify--without cheating, please--which of the following bands you recognize:
The Grateful Dead, Angry Frog, Cream, The Band, The Sex Pistols, The Doors, The Plastic Ten, Mickey Smack, The Who, Sultan 12, Dion, The Rolling Stones, Bananarama, Stars of Tomorrow, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ziggy Stardust.
Note that the above list consists of a number of major names you really ought to recognize, a number of significantly-less-important ones, and a number that I simply made up. Other polytubbies, feel free to contribute so we can avoid learning what Al didn't learn in dribs and drabs.

So I would expect you to be familiar with every group or singer that has sold at least 40 million records, right?

Grateful Dead... heard of. Don't know any songs.
Sex Pistols... vaguely heard of. don't know any songs.
The Doors... they made those Vietnam-era songs, I think. "I aint no fortunate son... some folks are born silver spoon in hand" that's them right?
The Who... I know of them from the Animaniacs skit back in the day that was like the "Who's on first" bit by Abbot & Costello. But no, I only know of them because of the obvious joke "Q: Who's playing on stage? Who's playing on stage!"
Dion... as in Dion and the Belmonts? Runaround Sue? The Wanderer? That's my ****.
Rolling Stones... yes. I know who they are. I can't get no... satisfaction. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and company.
Lynyrd Skynyrd.... the name looks familiar with all the y's. Don't know though
The rest, I don't know nor have heard of.
Can I make a list now? I want to see how IGNORANT people on Apolyton are

Oh, and just to respect Guy's OP, I also dislike the flow of tawdry plastic crap associated with Xmas. Yes, there's always tawdry plastic crap, but they really go the extra mile this time of year. They take the existing crap, put in some motors and blinking lights, slap on an ugly picture of Santa and put it at the front of the store.
