That being said, reinstating Victorian values and discipline would only be beneficial to any armed service.
Victorian values and discipline? I never considered Victorian-era armies well-run entities. Did they even have formal training back then? All they did was drill, right?

I'd rather have a military trained to fight than trained to drill only.

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

What the **** are you talking about? What does that link mean? It's a drill manual. Like I said, all they did was drill. Drill made some more sense with lines of musketeers but that style of warfare was outdated by the Victorian era anyway.

I want to know what these Victorian values and discipline are that would improve modern day militaries, as claimed by bc1871. You can't really compare a modern military with a Victorian one but modern soldiers receive more instruction than Victorian ones ever did and are likely more disciplined.

What you call drill is actually battle training.

            • That **** was outdated by the Victorian era. The US Civil War showed the ineffectiveness of lines of infantry firing volleys at each other.

                • Yes 1837-1901. That **** was outdated by 1861 and possibly earlier. I don't know enough about the Crimean or Mexican-American Wars to know how those were fought.

                  • What about the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1?

                    • I wonder what bc1871 would say about the Victorian military proficiency at Isandlwana.

I don't know how that war was fought either, however, I imagine if both the French and the Germans were determined to march lines of infantry at each other and fire volleys that it would still happen. But if one side didn't play by those rules (as in the Confederacy or the Zulu in the Anglo-Zulu Wars or the Boers in the Boer Wars, etc.) those tactics needed to be changed to be effective.

                            • I say that some Roman military discipline wouldn't do the military any bad. Forgot these pansy firearms...just swords and shields.

And whilst we were at it, reintroduce capital punishment - it can't do any harm, surely?
