  • Yes, but you don't know. They could simply have been brought up in a very insular environment. They could be perfectly lucid on other subjects and just have a bizarre hang-up about science. And either way, they could be wonderful people who happen to be dotty on one subject which, unless they are science teachers, is of no consequence. I'm thinking here of the way I used to think Evangelicals were raving, reactionary psychos before I met my wife's aunt and uncle--some of the nicest, most mild-mannered people I've ever met.

    • I'm with Mobius. Young Earth Creationism is symptomatic of far greater issues.

What makes being a young earth creationist so terrible that it makes someone marriageable?

I could see if they had a drug problem, or were part of a cult, or had an incurable disease. But (baring some other thing) how is that one thing so bad?

(I know quite a large number of young earth creationists, many of them are good people.)
Being a good or nice person should be a given for marriage. For me, that belief is borders on childish and ignorant and I can't take that person seriously in any intellectual capacity if they hold that belief.

There are lots of intelligent creationists. You can be smart and deluded at the same time, e.g. Paul Krugman.

QFT, I know a few creationists, and their views puzzle me, but they're perfectly fine people and quite smart.

No, not at all, and vice versa. I am clear on my opinions, but, in the end, who the heck really cares about that stuff? It really is irrelevant.

That's what I've been saying for years!
Is it me, or is MOBIUS a horrible person?

                    Huh?

Believing in creationism precludes the possibility of being smart. No intelligent person could accept creationism...

So you're saying I'd be both pleased AND annoyed at the same time.

                              • I was annoyed. They don't take reservations and told me it would be a15 minute wait. An hour later I spoke to the manager because I was still waiting. Got my food and drink comped
