I always recommend Chicago in threads like this, but if you have kids, you wouldn't want them in the public schools here. Plenty of decent, fairly affordable neighborhoods and good public transport however. Lots of Russians, too, especially in the suburbs.

I'm a big fan of Portland (OR) but don't know much about the transit system there. But it's beautiful and has shockingly nice weather. Lots of great cheap restaurants there.

Don't know why the SF transit system was being bad-mouthed, as I have always found it exceptional. The geography of the bay area prevents it being really efficient, though. And it's totally unaffordable to buy there. But I really love that city to visit.

I like Austin a lot - warm weather, great food, awesome music scene, and it's where Texas hides all their liberals. Again, no clue about transit there.

Have you considered Las Vegas? The schools are supposed to be good, and it's been hit hard by the housing crash, so you get good property at a good price. The transit system is great -- if you're going to the airport or the casinos.

Better than most in the U.S., but still woefully inadequate compared to European cities. Owning a car would still be a must for someone looking to do professional-level work or who wanted to get outside the city limits to experience the best benefits of the Portland area.

The weather's indeed gorgeous for about 4 months out of the year. Right now it's chilly and very rainy, which should last until about...oh... June.

San Diego is very nice. And very, very expensive. But they don't have public transportation like onodera wants. The climate is just about perfect, though.

Portland isn't an option because it's a big honking terrist target.

I didn't see any hipsters in SD when I visited, but I was confined mostly to the Gas Lamp district when venturing downtown, or was up north in the Solana Beach area where I was staying. Seemed like a pretty "normal" American west coast city population to me.
