Universities have value by providing a piece of paper which means you have proven your worth in that field to some degree.

This is why I find it pointless to get online degrees, etc. Everyone knows they're a joke, so the paper is worthless.

Most online degrees yes, and if I felt like my online degree was like most of them I wouldn't have gotten it. This one is different in that your tests are industry certifications and they aren't online. Plus, it has the backing of a lot of the big name tech companies in addition to government backing. It's the only accredited online university.

It doesn't matter what you think, it matters what prospective employers think. If I see an online/distance education degree on a resume, it gets tossed.

Well, not everyone is you. I got this degree because of its backing and its recommendation from people in IT.

Not everyone is me, but the smart ones are.

Well, there's no way I can win this argument. I'll just take solace in the fact that this degree has a lot of backing from big name companies and there are plenty of people in IT who respect it and recommend it.

If you went to a real university, you may've come to this realization much sooner.

Do you have your degree yet?

If so, what job did you get?

If people "respected" the "degree", why is the starting salary $30K?

I have no idea what the starting salary is. I was simply estimating it based on the economic climate and the reality that there is a line for every job out there. Also, I haven't completed the degree yet and no I don't have a job. I guess we'll see how it all goes. It's not like I had other options open to me. This is the best deal I can get and it certainly can't be worse than my lone marketing degree from a state university.

Why are you so inept at life?

It seems increasingly rare that people look into what they'd be getting before they make an expensive, four-year commitment.

Only if you can do a job many, many other people can do.

When you get worthless degrees from worthless schools, the line will be very long indeed.

I got laid off in Feb 2009 when the investment banks were all exploding and the company I worked for was directly tied to investment bank software. This was the height of the economic recession, was it not?

Want to guess how long I was unemployed for?

                      • Starting salary for anything right now is going to be low. Unless it's something very specialized and in high demand. It's an employer's market right now. Also, you're in Canada. Big difference.

Is it really? My SO and my brother both recently graduated from school and both landed high-paying jobs, WELLLLLL above $30K a year...

Doesn't matter, I had many American companies coming to ME asking for interviews. Why are they looking to Canada if there's long long lines of Americans looking for jobs?

The problem is simple: most IT people are a dime a dozen. An IT Security degree from an online school puts you at the VERY back of that pack.

Well, we'll see then Asher. I have no idea how my resume is going to be received. It will be interesting to see. In the meantime, I'm just going to keep focusing on improving my skills in different areas.
