Don't listen gribbler, if you ask people this in real life they might think you're a **** up, keep it on Apolyton, trust me.

To answer the OP, I'm guessing you're just giving off a creeper vibe, try to be more subtle next time.

    • Investment banks hedge their risks. Commercial banks can't, because their entire business model is to borrow short (take deposits) and lend long (issue loans).

i didn't mean to imply certainty. obviously, it's impossible to be 100% sure of any counterfactual. nevertheless, governments, bankers etc. saw enough of a risk of collapse at the time, to take the measures they did.

do you support the action that was taken? or would have supported a different course of action with the same end goal?

Banks are individual actors. Moral hazard applies only to individual actors...
well yeah, but the system is made up of those individual actors, and if banks, or banks of a certain size, aren't allowed to fail, then there's no moral hazard for those banks.

        • 1) I think you misunderstand what "moral hazard" means. Having moral hazard is bad, not good.
          2) I think that protecting banks against systemic liquidity risk is a wholly legitimate act of the central bank(s) because it is a risk that no individual bank can hedge while still acting like a bank. We want banks to act like banks because we need somebody to translate short term saving (deposits and other cash substitutes) into long term lending (direct lending, securitized lending etc). The spread between rates on the two is the business of the central bank. The credit crisis was an example of a systemic widening of the liquidity premium.

As almost all other threads eventually get derailed into a discussion of Albie's life, I consider that only fair.
