Precisely, it is not a gap for something like a donkey.

An ass is a donkey. As arse is a bottom.

We don't say ass when we mean arse because we speak english.

What do you call an abode that occupies the same floor as another person's abode? Split flat?

To be clear, roommates in a dorm actually share a ROOM so the word is very accurate. This is a typical college dorm:

Do you British do things differently?

Here's UNC Chapel Hill dorms in 1950 which were 4 to a room:

It's also a flat. See "or part of a single storey".

Yes. We have a wall running down the middle there.

Well no wonder the term 'roommate' has no meaning to you all. Students in the US who live in college dorms are literally roommates.

I'm a little surprised that you Brits are that concerned with privacy that you get your own rooms when you're on campus. Do you also not have a communal bathroom?

Honestly, back in 1980 I had more than half of that for myself including a bathroom with a shower

                              oh, and Im danish.

Well in the US, I guess our college students live a Barracks lifestyle or something. Really surprised that crowded Europe has the space for college students to have their own rooms, not share bathrooms with an entire floor of students, etc.
