There are some college halls of residence shared rooms, where 2 people sleep in the same room and are called Roommates.

At least, there were at my hall. It was a small bit cheaper, but a huge mistake for anyone who ended up in one.

And now the US makes college students SHARE ROOMS and have loads of people share toilet and shower facilities!!!

So, what exactly are the benefits of living in the so-called most powerful nation in the world again? Cos I ain't seein' any...

When I was at uni loads of people shared toilet and shower facilities. There were very few en-suite rooms, and they were expensive. For toffs only. Some people were in apartment style ones with 5 or 6 sharing.

It does seem that in all the modern halls of residence, including the ones they were building when I left in the late 90s everyone gets en-suite facilities.

There was the wonderful tale of The Phantom ****ter.

Someone did a crap so large that it stuck out of the bowl of the toilet by an entire foot. We got a great photo of it with someones size 12 boot (13 US, 47 Europe) next to it for scale. It also had impressive girth, and would not flush.

No one admitted to producing this monster so the hero who logged it was nicknamed The Phantom ****ter. We, of course, did the only thing possible in this situation.

We made a load of posters, directing people all the way from the entrance of the halls to the very stall where they could see the gigantic turd. We were like a young PT Barnum. It was a phenomenon. If only the internet had been available.

I had 4 roommates in college, it was the normal state of affairs (probably 80% of the students had roommates).

First was decent, but we mostly stayed to ourselves. I was at my most anti-social at the time.

Second started out friendly, but ended up terrible. I didn't feel safe in the room by half way through the year, and arranged to move out to a single room (in one of the worst dorms and basically just had a bed and a closet). Living with him for the last couple of months was one of my more miserable times.

Third was very different from me. I expect I was the worst roommate that year, as I am somewhat messy. He wasn't nerdy at all.

Fourth was the best. He was a nerd, we played games a bit and talked about science fiction and the like. I was social at this point and so didn't end up spending tons of time with him, but did spend some (I spent time with my friends, often, when I wasn't working).

Because I shared showers/toilets as described, the second was the worst due to not only my roommate, but the other people in my hall. There were times when **** was smeared all over the walls and there was piss everywhere. Being in 'substance free' halls was always better. They were never 'substance free' but generally had a lot less of it, and much less craziness.

After the first year we were mostly on our own finding private accommodation, I was sharing a house with 2 others. Was great.

I think that is how it is at most institutions, with dorms mostly just being for Freshmen.

My undergraduate prided itself on being a residential campus with the associated lifestyle. More than ~10% were not allowed to live off campus.

It did make for a different lifestyle.

I liked living off campus, better transition to the real world too, cooking, cleaning, shopping, bills etc.

Yeah, I wonder if 4 years of provided food/housing discourages maturity development.
