Unions are OK imo. They just get too big and unweildly and then there are too many stupid rules. Like when the auto companies were going to crap a year or so ago they were paying people not to work and a bunch of crap. The worst I've seen is in theatre though. IATSE does a lot of good, but there are some productions where you need to hand one prop to someone on stage and the whole thing gets delayed because you have to wait for some union prop guy 3 hours away to drive in and perform that one motion.

Only deep-water oil drilling, which is but a small fraction of all the drilling being done.

Joining a union ****s you in the long term. Just ask the GM employees who had great benefits until union labor costs drove GM into bankruptcy. Oops.

Unions manage to raise their own members' wages mainly by exploiting lower-status workers.

The only way you can raise producer prices above equilibrium without subsidies is by preventing entry.

They thus increase both inefficiency and inequality.

That makes it all better then.

True, but workers still need some form of protection. There was a well done documentary called, "Made in L.A." about the brutal and unfair working conditions faced by illegal immigrants in the garment industry in America. Personally I don't know why we bother protecting the working rights of illegal immigrants beyond the kidnappings and lock ins that happen. My point here is not to turn the discussion toward the labor situation for illegal immigrants etc., but more to point out that when there is no regulation companies do turn tyrannical. There must be some form of regulation protecting both workers, and companies from exploiting each other.

To those of you opposed to unions, what other system would you prefer and why?

Companies turn 'tyrannical' when they have the upper hand. In labor over supply situations such as today, companies are free to dump workers and upgrade poor performers on the cheap and in general treat their employees like crap as they know the employees have no real alternative (union or otherwise).

Thus a working approach to ensuring that labor is not in oversupply is to have an environ that promotes industry and the resultant hiring that accrues to it. Thus de-regulation also can be a stimulus to worker conditions (and ultimately their strength of bargaining position union or individual) if it promotes overall industry growth.

The Jones act only effects US territorial waters not 50 miles out. Only an idiot would not understand this after three months of wall to wall coverage. There was never anything to wave since it never applied. Also it would be retarded to risk another spill until a safety review is completed detailing why the spill happened and how it can be avoided. The last thing we need is more corner cutting to result in yet another spill.

Are you ****ing stupid or is this just an act you use on the internet? Why do you think that Coastal Governors and Congressional Representatives are coming out against it? Why do you think the Admin has been slapped down twice by the Courts?

yes, lately, if you are being an US president, you are either shot, not a pleaser, a crook, the one who pardons the crook, wears a sweater in an inappropriate manner, shot again (but missed), wants people to read his lips, does not have sex with women doing something with their lips, and is afraid of holy nucular warriors so you have to invade someone...
