  • Obama's Role In The Oil Spill

I'm having trouble understanding why exactly people are placing so much blame regarding the oil spill on Obama. I'll admit I don't know much about the situation or his official role, but that's why I'm posting this. It seems to me that in the middle of an unprecedented economic disaster that this gusher, despite being a terrible scourge whose effects will be with us for decades, pales in comparison. Of course it's destroying a major seaport, countless acres of land, and further damaging an already damaged area, but I don't see how this trumps the need to create jobs and avoid further national financial meltdown which in my mind would ruin the entire country.

As I understand it the DoD, which is under his command, bears responsibility for natural disasters, the MMS and Bush era deregulation played a role in leading to the spill, and BP has been dragging their feet cleaning up their own mess. However when Obama tells BP that they had better clean up their slop he is accused of strong arming private industry.

I'll agree that his moratorium on drilling in the Gulf is a poorly thought out move that only serves to further disrupt an already fragile job market. The issue is that I keep hearing people say Obama is not doing enough, but I doubt the validity of this claim. Pundits with 30 second talking points and potbellied fishermen with outlandish ideas of what should happen leave me frustrated.

What should Obama be doing and how is he supposed to be responsible for that? Specifically. Not, "He's the leader of the free world and we should be able to get this done because...well, because black superman isn't down here being a community organizer while also fixing the economy, mitigating two wars and the politics with proximal nations, Iranian nuclear development, a failing drug war, keeping our currency competitive with the euro and saudi gold dispensing ATMs and also I want him to do it all without any tax dollars ."

Ask Bush. He took plenty of bullets over things not in his control.

The situation in the US today is similar to the situation in Germany at the end of 1918. With the German Army disintegrating in France and Germany's economy in ruins the conservative German Prime Minister called the leader of the Socialist party into his office, explained the situation, lamented that Germany's only choice was to surrender and then handed the government over to his Socialist counterpart and showed him where to sign the instrument of surrender. Afterwards all the sins of the previous conservative German government and all the consequences of those sins were laid on the shoulders of the socilaists. The same thing is happening to America, only our Hitler will sport a boufant hairdo instead of a toothbrush moustache.

Not the same. All the things he gets blamed for, he really did (or didn't do).

Well Bush was busy masterminding 9/11 with the Reptilian Aliens so they and the Rothschilds could return us to a state of serfdom with Swine Flu vaccines and a shadow government, so we really can't blame him too much.

The spill itself can't be blamed on Obama specifically. Much of Obama's response was inadequate and/or non-existent, and he insisted on playing politics by pandering to the unions during the crisis.

The conditions causing the spill can be partially blamed on the federal government and environmental regulations, which did not allow drilling closer to shore (ie, in shallower water) or on land where we know there are proven reserves (ie, ANWR). Not to mention the fact that government regulators were clearly incompetent (not that I necessarily support government regulation, but it's clear that the regulation didn't work due to federal incompetence). Certainly, BP is to blame as well, due to their awful safety record.

                    1) He should have waived the Jones Act immediately after foreign offers of help started to come in instead of rejecting them.

                    2) He could probably not put a knife in a job market that has already suffered enough body blows and drop his idea for a 6 month moratorium on oil drilling.

@Gribbler: Clinton didn't get blamed for global warming and hurricanes.

This has been helpful. I still don't see why it has been so damaging to his Presidency. I've understood since the moratorium's inception that it was a bad idea (also in light of the moratorium how in the hell was he pandering to the unions?). The delayed response is certainly a ding to his reputation and rightfully so, but I fail to see why BP isn't getting the lion's share of the blame.

Further, I never agreed with the whole "shakedown" argument in regards to Obama's holding BP accountable. From a purely conceptual standpoint I understand the argument and why it would be valid on paper. Though when I consider how screwed up the Exxon spill was and how families still haven't been compensated for very obvious damages incurred by that sot of a sailor, I think we can let actions like Obama's so called "threat" slide.

Still though, one of the roles of the DoD is to protect the nation in the event of a natural disaster. It seems silly that they would have to wait for Obama's nod to deploy their forces to help contain and clean.
