If someone is depressed, and they're going to prescribe meds, it'll be an SSRI.

Whatever SSRI they prescribe you will depend on your medical history and the discretion of the doctor, not anything MrFun may or may not say in the session.

I don't see anything wrong with how it went down, it wasn't a session... Hell, in my case my GP prescribed an SSRI before I even met with a psychiatrist. It's standard operating procedure because of how long they take to kick in, and it's not like there's any variance in it that behaviour would account for. If you're interested in trying medication, you best start right away. Talking for a while first doesn't do anything different but delay feeling better.

The psychiatrist did not want to take the time to answer the questions I had. I was lucky that I got at least two of my questions in before he bolted. Seriously - at least pretend that you care about the person you're prescribing for.

I said it wasn't a session. I also readily admit that I don't know what is proper. It's just an uninformed opinion. Don't get me wrong.

What questions were you asking? Maybe the guy was a dick, but if it's not a session he's not supposed to talk about a lot of things with you. For the most part it's for him to gather information on you to prepare for the first session.

The side effect profile of escitalopram is similar to that of other SSRIs. For example, according to the FDA analysis of depression trials common side effects for the highest approved dose of escitalopram are insomnia (14% vs. 4% for placebo), diarrhea (15% vs. 5% for placebo), dry mouth (9% vs 3% for placebo), somnolence (9% vs 1% for placebo), dizziness (7% vs 2% for placebo), sweating (8% vs 1% for placebo), constipation (6% vs 1% for placebo), fatigue (6% vs 2% for placebo) and indigestion (6% vs. 1% for placebo).[17]
you could get insomnia and diarrhea. fun.

but I guess you could try it. What's the worst thing that could happen?

How much information can a person get about the other person in fifteen minutes, enough to prescribe a drug that affects a person's brain chemistry?

And no offense was taken Sloww.

No matter how many questions he asks you or you ask him, it won't tell him anything more about your brain chemistry. They can't know about that unless they do very expensive tests, which they never do.

Instead they'll put you on the latest SSRI with the lowest risk of side-effects which attacks the symptoms you've described. That's pretty much all the meeting was for, I gather, to get a list of basic symptoms (severe depression, suicidal thoughts --> yup, SSRI --> prescribe). The real psychoanalysis would start in the first session.

Probably it depends on what you present to him. If he thinks your suicidal thoughts are serious, than he probably wants to act right away.

Well I am satisfied with the research I did. I will take my first pill of Lexapro tomorrow using the sample the psychiatrist gave me.

I looked up the Illinois suicide hotline phone number and made note of it in case I have any thoughts of suicide that are even more serious than what I've had due to any complications with the drug.

I can't really say much, as these medications are outside of my usual practice. I do know, however, that Lexapro tends to have fewer sexual side effects as compared to other SSRIs, so that's a plus.
