  • Jacob Rees-Mogg. His sister Annunziata (Annunziata!) is standing in the neighbouring constituency.
she's running in my parent's constituency, and i think she might well win. the lib dem incumbent (david heath) is defending a 3 figure majority and unlike 2005, has a labour candidate to compete with.

i was all set to vote for david heath in 2005, and then a few days before the election, i got some leaflet from his office aimed at 'young voters'. it was the most patronising piece of bull**** i've ever read and it cost him my vote.

You should absolutely let them know. Not enough politicians (or anyone) realize when they are being patronizing.

But he won't because he's young and the young in this country are lazy ****ers who can't be bothered to vote in general or communicate what's pissing them off - So instead we get a teenage style strop instead...

Is that patronising enough for ya...?

But yeah, thanks for making it just a tiny bit easier for the Tories to win an overall majority and **** our country over just because of a petty fit of pique...

          • you want my vote, don't patronise me. it's very simple.

Just out of interest, what did the leaflet say to get you so riled up?

it's hard to recall the exact wording (it was 5 years ago after all!), but the language used would have been better suited to explaining the issues to 10 year olds. there were things about the economy, tuition fees, the iraq war, some local issues, but everything was presented in such simple terms, completely lacking in nuance and seemed to assume that those to whom it was directed knew nothing about politics or the issues facing the country. it would have been a lot more honest if they'd written it in crayon.

the most frustrating thing was that i actually agreed with a lot of lib dem policy in those areas.

                    • talking of local candidates, you couldn't find a worse example of labour's arrogance than in swansea west. the chap they've got to replace alun williams (who was father of the house in the last parliament), used to represent croydon before the voters booted him out in 2005 and until then had the highest expenses of any MP. despite his name (geraint davies), he's not local at all and has done nothing for the people he hopes to represent.

both the lib dems and tories are running high quality local candidates against him (peter may and rene kinzett), but i think labour will end up holding on to the seat. people in south wales have labour in their veins and would probably vote for satan himself if he was wearing a red rosette.

See this is it, in a nutshell, why I hate the Tories. Keep it in the family (like their parents were involved with the Tories before their brats) and then Boris Johnson's brother is standing for Orpington. F**king nepotism. A leopard never changes it's spots

                        • yeah it sucks, but it's hardly restricted to the tories. for example, we've had two brothers in cabinet in the last parliament, tony benn's son was a labour minister too and then you get people like peter mandleson, who as if just being peter mandleson wasn't bad enough, is part of a political dynasty (his grandfather was herbert morrison).

                          • Seriously, it's ****ing Great Britain! Of course you have nepotism. We've tried to emulate somewhat with the Kennedys and Bushes, but we can't match up...

                            • Whoops.

The UKIP candidate for Norwich North has called for the blowing up of Iran before it acquires nuclear weapons and has described Afghans as "backward".

Responding to a survey about troops on the website theyworkforyou.com, Glenn Tingle used swear words to describe tribes in Afghanistan.

He said: "We should blow them up first" when replying to a question about Iran's nuclear weapons programme.

The United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) said the remarks were regretted.

                              'Extraordinary remarks'

UKIP said that Mr Tingle "regrets any offence he has caused through using such intemperate language".

"As an ex-serviceman himself, Mr Tingle is very passionate about matters relating to British service personnel and their safety," said the statement.

"In this instance, he has allowed his passion to get the better of good taste in terms of the language and black humour he has displayed."

Conservative candidate Chloe Smith, who was elected to represent the seat at a by-election last year, called Mr Tingle's remarks on the website "quite extraordinary and ludicrous".

"This seems to demonstrate quite an immature approach to important issues," she told the BBC.

Labour candidate John Cook said: "His response to the online survey was unacceptable and inappropriate.

"It is not the sort of behaviour one would expect from someone expecting to represent Norwich North."

                              'Beyond a joke'

Liberal Democrat candidate David Stephen said: "They are inflammatory and irresponsible and not the way to suggest the country can behave in the world.

"Mr Tingle's remarks are beyond a joke."

Green Party candidate Jessica Goldfinch said: "People do say things in the heat of the moment and I think knowing what I do about Glenn Tingle that he will deeply regret them.

"He must know they are unacceptable. He'll be feeling deeply regretful."

Andrew Holland, the Christian Party candidate, said: "I don't like bad language at any time, but certainly speaking in public. I would not approve of that.

"I suppose he felt strongly at the time, but it is not the way to behave."

David Fleming, the BNP's press officer for East Anglia, said the language Mr Tingle used was "crude" and said his comments about Iran's nuclear programme were "absolutely mad".

He said the BNP candidate for Norwich North - Thomas Richardson - does not speak to the media.

Independent candidate Bill Holden said he did not want to comment.

The general election takes place on 6 May.
