David Cameron will tomorrow promise to deliver the most extensive devolution of power in a generation when he declares that a Conservative government would hand people "direct control" over how they are governed nationally and locally.

In a direct invitation to voters to join him in governing Britain, the Tory leader will promise in his election manifesto to offer California-style referendums on any local issue if residents can win the support of 5% of the population.

The cynic in me suggests this would result in a wave of local referendums based on NIMBY-ism, which subsequently get struck down for contravening UK or EU law. All funded at the tax-payer's expense, of course.

        More UKIP Little Englander hilarity...

"We're going to have billboards saying "Ukip says vote for … whoever it is," rambled Pearson. "Our candidates – where we have them – say: 'If you possibly can, you vote for mostly the Conservative candidate … or if not hold your nose and by all means vote for me …"

          Oh dear.

And so to the leadership. When Farage announced he would be devoting his energies to standing against the speaker, John Bercow, in Buckingham, the party's top job was taken over by former Tory peer Lord Pearson of Rannoch, the sort of patrician dullard you pray not to be seated next to at dinner. He has quite the way with metaphors. Brussels was "a corrupt octopus", and pretty soon "we won't just have its tentacles round us, we'll be in its bowel".

By some presentational ****-up, it fell to his lordship to explain Ukip's eccentric policy of backing Eurosceptic MPs from other parties in some constituencies, often whilst still fielding candidates themselves.

"We're going to actively campaign for Eurosceptics," he declared, before explaining that they were fielding a candidate in Stroud, but that the chap was using his election address to tell people to vote for the Tory candidate. But if not, to vote for him.

"We're going to have billboards saying "Ukip says vote for … whoever it is," rambled Pearson. "Our candidates – where we have them – say: 'If you possibly can, you vote for mostly the Conservative candidate … or if not hold your nose and by all means vote for me …"

"None of these people have actually asked for our help," he explained, unwittingly invoking the old "with friends like these" cliche. Before long, it was on to Ukip's proposed ban of the burqa and niqab in public "and some private" buildings. How were they going to enforce that?

"We haven't said private buildings," countered Pearson.

Well you have. It's in your manifesto. "Have we?" his lordship wondered of his more junior colleagues. Doubtless he'll get round to reading the 15-page document in good time.

Well thank heavens for small mercies. Actually, quite large mercies if you think about it

So labour's election strategy for 2010 consists of smearing both UKIP and BNP? Most interesting, I didn't realize that they were losing voters there. I thought labour was losing voters to the conservatives while conservatives were losing voters to minor parties.

They are trying to paint their opponents as all like the BNP/etc?

You write that as if if the other main parties weren't smearing them too, while getting smeared by each other, as the minor parties smear them back in the moments when they're not smearing the other minor parties.

The only person not doing this is Lord Pearson of Rannoch, who got confused and smeared himself.

BNP is actually left economcially but nationalist as opposed to internationalist. The white proles know no party really likes or respects them (in the US these people are so frustrated they vote for Republicans who go against their economic interest) and they feel on a street level that they are "loosing their country" and how the NHS and public school system have deteriorated, its logical that they are drawn to something like this.

The Slovenian Nationalist Party and a dozen East Euro parties work on the same principle and genearly get into parliment on the platform. No other party wants a coalition with them but they don't really mind this since they can keep complaining and playing jesters of the court ensuring reelection and act as a protest vote.

The BNP will probably become something like this.

                          • First leaders debate tonight. Not sure Clegg can give Brown and Cameron the pasting that Vince Cable gave his fellow prospective chancellors. Or even if he did if that would make a difference.

                            • It is a massive coup for the Lib Dems even to be involved in this, such is the lack of attention span in this country for anything past the two main parties...

The important thing is he'll get exposure to a large number of people who probably still haven't heard of him or know who his is.

I've noticed he's come a long way since he started as Lib Dem leader just the other year, hopefully far enough to impress people who know very little about him.

                              • In my estimation, he's come a long way.

Specifically, from being an unknown quantity to being an annoying git. I'd quite like to punch his thick, petulant face, and that's despite being a regular Lib/Dem voter.
