            • The average lifetime income for a professional degree (doctor/lawyer I think mostly) is 4.4m.

The AVERAGE SALARY IS 100-300K (depending).

I don't think the people you know are representative.

http://www.bls.gov/oes/2008/may/oes231011.htm a lawyer who makes more than 75% of lawyers makes only 160k.

              • As I said, the guys I know are most likely at the upper end due to where they are in their careers. I'm just a regular college grad but I make considerably more than the average due to having done it so long. I'd expect nothing less from my peers.

                • If you took a survey of people your age who were doctors/lawyers/etc, I don't think the average income would be over 300k.

Once more, the average lifetime earnings for these professions is just 4.4m. That is over twice the average lifetime earnings of someone who has only a bachelors.

                  • Since I said make more than twice what I do, I'll round that down to twice like you say and call it a day.

You aren't average, your life time earnings are far more than 2.1m.

                      • Agreed, I'm above average, and my friends that are doctors and lawyers are above average also.

                        • Then you can't say that your income should be a base to determine what is laughable/etc.

It isn't representative of middle management, just like your friends incomes aren't representative of lawyer/doctor incomes.

What? That's the most absurd claim I've seen in a long while.

$200,000 might be laughable to some people in some parts of the U.S., but in the world? To the vast majority of people in today's world, that kind of wealth is unheard of--the stuff of kings.

I make less than that, but I still enjoy a quality of life in the 99th percentile of the world.

                            • I would bet that for any company in the US larger than 500 employees that less than 1% of the CEOs make less than 200k and over 90 percent make 1mil + including bonuses a year. So yes I would find 200K laughable for a CEO. That quote was about CEOs pay, which I stand behind.

                              • That is a recent, and ridiculous, phenomenon. A lot of people have written about it.

A few countries are starting to follow us, I don't think that is a good thing.
