Conservatives want the Texas congressman as their next President.

Paul was preferred by 31% of voters in the Conservative Political Action Conference's presidential preference straw poll yesterday, one of the strongest wins in CPAC history.

"Congressman Paul is committed to bringing the conservative movement back to its traditional platform of limited government, balanced budgets and a foreign policy of nonintervention," said Paul spokesman Jesse Benton.

In a surprising result, Texas Congressman and 2008 presidential candidate Ron Paul (R) won the presidential straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference, capturing 31% of the vote. Three-time CPAC straw poll winner Mitt Romney (in '06, '07, and '08) finished second with 22%, followed by Sarah Palin with 7%, and Tim Pawlenty with 6%.

The best news about this is that Palin only got 7%.

Other results from the straw poll: Just 2% approved of President Obama's job; 62% approved of the job congressional Republicans are doing; 73% had a favorable view of GOP Sen. Jim DeMint; 70% had a favorable view of Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck; 56% had a favorable view of John Boehner, and 51% had a favorable view of Mitch McConnell.

Paul is old, but his speech at CPAC was fiery. It also was the only speech to fill the hall, and was reported to be the most enthusiastic.

It might come down to, "who will end spending". That's about the only unity between parties that is developing, aside from afghanistan and copenhagen and gitmo and pakistan and stuff.

I would vote Ron (if he made GOP candidate, not in a primary), for the fair tax and to finish Obama's work socially. I'd take Ron+Hillary (she's quite a hawk).

In all seriousness, he's old enough that it'd be irresponsible of him to put himself forward as president candidate. There's a not negligible risk of him having a medical emergency in office if elected (not that he will be, but still).
