This is why I don't follow American politics. You just can't take it seriously.
This has been true since Reagan.

Rediculously early to be judging candidates anyway.

I guess it dawned on them that endorsing Ron Paul made them look silly.

of course, he can do all sorts of stuff - like dramatically reduce or end the "war on terror" and return the matter to where it belongs, with intel and policing. And he can end the drug war even faster. We've been at war for decades, dont the 2 parties ever get tired of war? I get the impression they need it...

                      A fair impression, I think.

Do you really think he would do those things, though? Both of those things have lots of powerful people deeply invested in them. They wouldn't just roll over. They'd fight (politically - I'm not suggesting a coup).

But the problem is Congress more than the Presidency.

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

But both things could be handled by executive orders (particularly the war on terror), and any legislative backlash he could still veto, veto, and veto some more, which most of his voters would understand to be his sole mandate since draining the swamp that is Congress would be impossible.
                        Unbelievable!

In what universe is a 51% approval rating indicative of such electoral problems?

The only people less popular than Congressional Democrats in Washington these days are Congressional Republicans, who haven't raised the electorate's of opinion of their party since 2008 and currently have to defend a lot more open seats in November.

While it's looking likely the Democrats will lose seats in November, like the party in power usually does in midterms (8 months is a lifetime in politics, by the way), there's little reason to believe at this point that they'll lose their majorities in either chamber.

Yeah sure, and who would have thought that Obama would end up sending more troops to Afganistan? Promises don't mean anything.

Oh, I don't know, anyone who paid attention to what he actually said.

"As a result, parts of Afghanistan are falling into the hands of the Taliban, and a mix of terrorism, drugs and corruption threatens to overwhelm the country. As president, I would deploy at least two additional brigades to Afghanistan to re-enforce our counterterrorism operations and support NATO's efforts against the Taliban."

One would think that if you were going to use polling data to support this PoV an average of them would lead to more substantive information to base conclusions on. FYI, a 47.4% approval rating does seem like a danger sign.
