Yes. The advantage is that infinite 6-regular planar graphs exist while infinite 8-regular planar graphs do not. Therefore hexes can represent real-world movement while tiles cannot (unless you permit fractional moves).

This is my problem, too. I'm not sure I like the hex idea. It irks me, but I share some of the same aggravation qualities as you do...

But you could staright walk North and South. A simple turning of the Monitor could solve your problem
