Well whatever you call them, I'm not sure what the advantages are to switching to hexes either.

It is not effectively played with octagons. There is no possible octagonal tesselation that would correspond to the civ4 map. There is no meaningful interpretation of your claim beyond "civ4 is played with grid points that each have 8 neighbors", which is the literal statement of the mechanic, making your analogy both mathematically incorrect and redundant.Originally posted by ricketyclik View Post.

No, it's not a planar graph because the graph cannot be drawn without intersecting edges.Originally posted by Felch View PostConceptually speaking, Kuci, Civ can be considered a planer graph. The way that pieces move is point to point, in eight directions. It's only the graphics that make it a square grid.

Hexagonal tessellation results in a planar graph, plus it results in all moves represent equal distances (rather than diagonal moves representing ~1.4 times as much distance as orthogonal ones).Originally posted by OzzyKP View PostWell whatever you call them, I'm not sure what the advantages are to switching to hexes either.

Yes. The advantage is that infinite 6-regular planar graphs exist while infinite 8-regular planar graphs do not. Therefore hexes can represent real-world movement while tiles cannot (unless you permit fractional moves).Originally posted by ricketyclik View PostOh alright, I take it all back, it's not effectively octagonal.
I should have said "I don't see the advantage of going to hexagonal, as it reduces the contact tiles from each tile from 8 to 6".
Happy with that?

I want an analog civ game. I want archers to shoot farther than melee.

Poly needs to revamp the front page to be more like CFC where people can quickly and easily see the latest news, the latest patches, the lastest team games, the lastest mods, etc... That way when new people see our front page they see everything Civ related they want to see and are tempted to visit the forums and make some new posts. That's the single greatest thing we can do to attract new blood.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.
