You do have to admit that the rest of Canada doesn't know how to host an Olympics, though. Montreal was a ****ing disaster and Vancouver seems to be turning out the same way.

Vancouver and Montreal both have tremendous track records of failure. At least Montreal had a winning hockey team at one point.

Vancouver has never won anything of importance. After they won the bid for the games, their luck had run out. They're lucky they could open the front doors to the stadium for the opening ceremonies..

Asher - Can you just imagine the cluster**** that would occur if TO were ever awarded the games?

It would be an epic disaster.

Yeah, it'd be even worse than Vancouver & Montreal. Even the PanAm games are inching towards disaster territory, and they're much, much smaller and no one even cares about them. And it's 5 years away.

88-89 was terrific for Calgary. Spectacular hosting of the Olympics, followed up by a Stanley Cup Victory...over Montreal, in Montreal.

Did anyone figure out what the protesters were protesting? I'm still confused...

I think that list covers most of their reasons. If the protesters figure out any other motivations I am sure they will shout it the next time they break something you know-- oppressive-- like a newspaper vending machine or the boxes that contain the free alternative papers

The rally was organized by the Olympics Resistance Network to protest capitalism and "aimed to disturb 'business as unusual' on the first day of the Games," according to a news release.

The ORN "About Us" web page devotes more text to defending indigenous land rights than to nebulous opposition to capitalism or 'business as usual', whatever that means.

They also have this curious page:

ORN Responds to Police Allegations of Undercover Cop

December 3, Vancouver Coast Salish Territories - According to reports by 24 hours news, on Monday Victoria Police chief Jamie Graham alleged that an undercover police officer was driving a bus organized by the Olympic Resistance Network to transport protesters to Victoria for an anti-Olympic Torch Relay protest on October 30.

A little more research turned up this article in the Vancouver Sun:

Are police trying to infiltrate anti-Olympics groups?

The B.C. Civil Liberties Association believes it is possible such "agents provocateur" may be used by the Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit and/or the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.
But the proof of such activities is, like smoke, difficult to grab on to. What the BCCLA and others point to for evidence is the incident involving at least three undercover Sûreté du Québec police officers at the 2007 Montebello leaders summit, where one officer was photographed carrying a rock.

There is a history of Canadian police agent provocateurs. Couple years back, some 'anarchists' were photographed wearing identical footwear to the police who arrested them. That's quite the coincidence.

Police accused of using provocateurs at summit

Police confirm that only four protesters were arrested during the summit – two men and two women. All have been charged with obstruction and resisting arrest.

"But we see very clearly in that video three (other) men being arrested . . . How do (police) account for these three people being taken in, being arrested? Where did they go?" Singh said.

"I have no hesitation in saying they were police agents . . . and they were caught red-handed."
                      ...
Neither the RCMP nor the Surete du Quebec would comment on the video or even discuss generally whether they ever use the tactic of employing agents provocateurs.

Yes, CAT workboots in Canadian winters are hilariously uncommon.

Except it wasn't winter. The pictures were taken in the month of August.

I think the article is making the anti-capitalist link to the people who think showing up at major events and breaking things is a good idea.

Also, ORN uses the term anti-capitalist a lot.
We are working towards a global anti-capitalist and anti-colonial convergence against the Games from February 10th-15th 2010.

Yeah they do embrace anti-capitalism, but still odd that the media reports don't mention the indigenous issue at all considering it is a major stated focus of their organization.

"Based on this call, our organizing as natives and non-natives alike is largely being done under the slogan of "No Olympics on Stolen Native Land".

Not a big deal, just really poor reporting imo. Bad reporting makes me curiouser.
