At least they haven't needed any food aid lately. They finally figured out how to feed themselves.

VANCOUVER - Radical protesters publicly announced they intended to adopt more aggressive tactics several hours before Hudson's Bay and TD Bank plate-glass windows were smashed during an anti-Olympics demonstration in downtown Vancouver.
The group respected the call of an all-ages, family-friendly demonstration Friday evening from the Vancouver Art Gallery to BC Place, a spokesman who identified himself as Walker Riley stated in Balaclava, a daily newspaper distributed in Vancouver during the Olympics.
"But Saturday is another day. Fists in the air will connect our struggle to the black eyes of the boys in blue," Mr. Riley said.
An anti-Olympic march through downtown streets on Saturday morning took a turn after a protester in a black-hooded sweatshirt with his face covered kicked in one of The Bay's windows. A handful of protesters in black threw metal chairs, shattering the window. Then other windows were smashed.
The riot squad - officers with batons and large shields backed up by officers armed with lethal force - appeared on the street moments after the Saturday ward. As the march continued down the street, newspaper boxes were bashed and dragged into the street, and loose-hanging decorations on restaurants and stores were trashed. Bystanders who made critical comments to the protesters were assaulted.
Later Sunday, police said they had released four of the seven people who had been arrested during the Saturday demonstration. Daniel Myers, of Shoreline, Wash., was charged with possession of a dangerous weapon and possession of a prohibited weapon. Mr. Myers, 22, was kept in custody on an immigration matter. Vancouver residents Charlotte Hannah, 23, and Willow Riley, 18, were charged with assaulting a peace officer and released.
The B.C. Civil Liberties Association, a traditional ally of protesters on the street, Sunday condemned the vandalism. David Eby, the association president, said he was "sickened" by the reports of the incident.
Since the start of the torch relay last fall, the civil liberties association has sent trained volunteers to watch some demonstrations and monitor whether the rights of the protesters were violated. However, organizers of the Saturday march specifically asked the association not to attend on Saturday. Mr. Eby said he was not told why the legal observers were not wanted. It was the first time that the association had been asked to not attend a protest, he said
"I had no idea what they had in mind. I thought they were going to do a sit-in on the street ... based on posters they distributed," he said in an interview Sunday. "I had no idea of property destruction and the general thuggery."
Constable Jana McGuinness said police were aware on Friday that a group of people within the anti-Olympic protest intended to escalate their tactics but police did not know exactly what they were going to do. Police adjusted their plans for the Saturday demonstration to ensure resources were available for any eventuality, she said.
Police on bicycles and from the crowd-control unit were at the protest when it began. The officers on the street provided much of the intelligence that enabled police to bring in the riot squad when some of the demonstrators resorted to vandalism.
Nat Marshik, a spokesperson for the Olympic Resistance Network, a group involved in organizing Saturday's demonstration, said organizers did not ask for monitors from the civil liberties association because their observers were "extremely impartial." The organizers expected "heavy police repression" and wanted legal observers who could intervene to cool down situations, she said.
Actions involving property damage were not organized by the resistance network, she said.
The demonstrations send a message to future host cities and future Olympic organizers, Ms. Marshik also said. "They will have to contend with social conflict," Ms. Marshik said. "I think it is a message to Sochi [which plays host to the 2014 Winter Games], I think it is a message to the 2016 cities and cities bidding on the 2018 Olympics."
"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

I'd chip in to buy them tickets to get to Russia. It would make some good TV.

Protesters charged with assault
Canwest Olympic Team; Canwest News Service

Two anti-Olympic protesters were charged Sunday with assaulting police officers after Saturday's violent demonstration in downtown Vancouver.
Seven people were arrested after the protesters clashed with police on Saturday afternoon, smashing windows and spray-painting cars and buses.
Charlotte Christine Hannah, 23, and Willow Violet Louise Riley, 18, were both charged with assaulting a peace officer, while Daniel Frederick Myers, 22, was charged with possession of a dangerous weapon and possession of a prohibited weapon.
Two men and two women were released on Saturday evening without being charged, Vancouver police said Sunday in a news release.
Myers, from Shoreline, Wash., remains in custody on an "immigration matter," police said.
The charges come after more than 200 masked protesters marched through the streets, throwing objects at police and damaging cars and businesses.
The black-clad mob smashed the front windows of a Bay store. The company is the main retailer for Games merchandise.
Police said a bag with a hammer was recovered and that one suspect had a bicycle chain wrapped around his fist when he was arrested.
The rally was organized by the Olympics Resistance Network to protest capitalism and "aimed to disturb 'business as unusual' on the first day of the Games," according to a news release.
Saturday's protests followed a standoff Friday night between demonstrators and police.
Two officers were injured on the first day of the Games as protesters hurled debris, Vancouver police said.
Molotovs for the Military
June 30, 2008 - 08:00 — no2010
Arson attack against military vehicles in Vancouver, Canada:
Canada out of Canada!
On the night of June 24th [2008], far from occupied Afghanistan, deep behind enemy lines of occupied Coast Salish territory, several molotov cocktails lit up the Canadain Armed Forces parkade. Several vehicles were damaged
This act was just another in an escalating campaign to destabilise the 2010 police state. Come the 2010 Olympics the occupation of indigenous territory will be seen for the military conquest that it is. In attacking the military at their home fort, we are united with the struggles against imperialism globally.

I think declining to give these loons free publicity when they break things is a good idea.

I'm not defending the protesters, just attacking the "journalists". If they don't even mention who these people are or what they are complaining about it is a pretty worthless article.
"a bunch of random people did naughty things in Vancouver today" isn't a news story.
Especially since, according to the articles at least, it started peacefully, and most of it was peaceful. But even the violent bits, people deserve to know who and why. The media has a responsibility to provide that information so people can make up their own minds.
Again, not because I necessarily am gung-ho about whatever these people are protesting, but I've just never seen such shoddy, pointless journalism.

hmmm-- call it shoddy and pointless if you will
If jopurnalists cover a peaceful protest and mention the cause, I have no problem with that
If a bunch of idiots vandalize and damage I think they lose the right to expect to be heard. I don't care what the message is-- If it needs broken windows and overturned newsboxes to be heard it cannot have much merit
The reality in many of these "protests" (I witnessed some when the G-7 was in Calgary) is that there is often no coherent message from the protesters other than some thermes of disliking capitalism or globalization. In many there are anarchists, communists and many other true idealists mixed with far too high a proportion of youthful idiots who have no message other than they are angry at everything and everyone and who are really just there to be part of the excitement they hope to cause
You don't get to 300 losses without being a pretty exceptional goaltender.-- Ben Kenobi speaking of Roberto Luongo
Ozzy, the problem is there's no actual message to the protests. Do you see any signs?
It's a bunch of rebellious anarchists destroying **** because they want to under the guise of a "protest". That's precisely why they told the BC Civil Liberties union to not show up.
Why the **** should these *******s get a global platform to send their message? All that does is send the message "if you want a global audience, just act like violent hooligans."
Ridiculous.
