The whole point was that he came up as a conventional actor, and was typecast into a lot of standard tight-assed authority figure roles. When he started making fun of his own persona late in his career, that was genius.

I have no problem with a "straight guy" in comedy. He just didn't do it for me. I have a sizable DVD collection but I can't think of a single flic I have that included him.
Obviously it is a matter of personal preference as the consensus seems to be he was great. Hence my

I have lots of great memories of Santo. Helluva player -- a clutch hitter, strong fielder and a real gamer. In his prime, he was considered a near-equal to Brooks Robinson as a fielder, and was definitely the better hitter. His lifelong battle with diabetes took him too soon, but he kept a positive attitude even as they had to amputate, one by one, his legs.
RIP, Ronnie.
