Wow. I recently read your thread on Counterglow and it seemed you were doing
                fine.

Sorry to hear, Japher. Any bites yet?
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

                        Good luck Japher.

It is very tough at least in this part of the USA.

I share with my employees count themselves fortunate as many companies are laying off and flooding the job pool.

Hopefully some turn around will be experienced on 2010, and that you Japher shall prosper!

I've been rather depressed the past several weeks since getting laid off. More so because my beer budget took a huge hit and I've been mostly sober.

Still, I've spent a lot of time with my kids and realize why it is a like to work; to get away from them!

Anyway, things have been going alright. Unemployment is giving me a good amount to live on and should do alright, and the state is picking up 65% of my insurance premium (yaay!). Still, I hate doing nothing so that isn't going to cut it. Hence, I've been pretty busy looking for work and have about 4 leads right now.

One is back in California near the grand parents. This would be nice, except I think I might be hindered from working there, or at least I might get sued if I take the job by my previous employer due to a non compete. However, I spoke with a friend who is an attorney in California and he told me those never hold up in CA, even if they originate in another state. So, I'm not to worried about it.

Two others are Sr. Engineer positions, and I have phone interviews for them today. One is in Omaha and the other in Chicago. They both are good companies and the opportunities are about equal in my book.

The last one is local. I actually interviewed with these guys about 3 months ago and they told me they liked me but wouldn't be hiring until first quarter 2010. At the time it wasn't a big deal. The company is a business consultant group, so that would be a nice change, and would make the best use of my MBA and Engineering degrees. I am having coffee with one of them tomorrow.

That's where I stand now. Thanks for reading.

                            Good reading.

                            Break a leg!
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Is the one in California in Fresno? I believe you said both your families where from there.

Yup, just outside of Fresno. It would be nice. I just had a phone interview with the last person I need to there. It was going ok but ended on a weird note when I asked about the management style of the company. Basically I tell them that I don't like micromanagement and prefer to be included as part of a solution instead of being told what the solution is. Usually they just tell you what you want to hear. This time the guy picked up the phone, as I was on speaker, and told me that it was sort of both at times, dependent on who you were working with/for. Now I wonder if he is thinking that makes me hard to work with. I guess in the end it's fine since if I am working for a micromanager I will eventually loathe my job.

I also asked how professional development was handled. He told me that since it was a small company there wasn't any real development to be had that wasn't self directed. He seemed a little worried that I was looking for an MBA job, which I am not. I told him that I must ask these questions to get a feel for the company, especially since their "Career" section of the web page is rather blank.

Anyway, I hope I didn't ruin my chances there.
