  • I was especially worried when my sis had her first check up but the treatment really does knock it back effectively. She's doin well on her blood tests (she's still in a range typical of smokers who dont have cancer yet) but well below levels they'd expect if she had another tumor growing. But hell, if it grows back, cut it out and resume treatment. It sucks, but with time comes new treatments, maybe even cures. I really do think they're close to major breakthroughs. Course its easy to be optimistic when you aint got cancer, but I'm pre diabetic with glaucoma and I still feel optimistic.

I'm a firm believer that they'll solve it in our life time. Just looking at the advances made, they basically know for sure it will be solved, they sort of know the abstract version of the solution, they know how it should be solved, they just haven't been able to do it in living organisms yet. But they're testing every day, new things come out monthly, if not weekly. It's a huge competition between researches who want Nobel prize and companies who want to make money off of it. There is just too much interest in solving this problem, as it affects every single person at some point. Every 4th Finn will get cancer of some sort, and so that affects their loved ones as well. So everyone is affected by it these days. So yes, it will be solved, and I believe it won't be too many years. In the meanwhile, more effective treatments will come available. It's a race to end this crap.

I just got back from my tests, everything was good. Now the doctor pulled back a bit, saying that she wouldn't give me any prognosis on how long I might live. She said it doesn't make sense these days, they have people with the same cancer I have, who have been coming there since the late 80s. Some of them never developed a new tumor, plus they were operated old school style, so they had less benefits back then.

Also the type is deletion instead of mutation, which means that the medicine and treatment that was first planned for me should it come back is not going to be effective. That sucks, but there's alternative plans made right now, and the first treatment for this is going under the knife anyway. They don't want to use anything on me so I don't grow any tolerance for this stuff, and that it looks pretty good and I should have a long life, and with today's science and advances, it's entirely possible this just isn't going to kill me at the end, and you know how doctors are, they are usually not TOO optimistic, giving false hope, so I guess things are looking up for me this time

And you are probably more right about the breakthroughs than a person with cancer, because you can be more rationalistic about it. Emotions and being afraid to die just clouds your thought so much that for most people it seems like false hope. But when you look at things objectively, it looks really good for the coming years anyway.

      • Good to hear.
And sometimes things are not what the doctors say.
When my father was 49 they told him he had 6 months to live. He retired and started fighting it. Two weeks ago he turned 82.

          • Cancer will be cured.
            Old age will be cured.

Here's hoping we live long enough to benefit from both.

Maybe. Cancer will be cured, old age, during our life time? I don't know. Some have said that a person has been already born who will live hundreds of years because of revolutionary breakthroughs in science.

I don't know how long I'd like to live. Depends, how good would our condition be? Maybe couple of hundred years. Certainly not a millennia. But 2-300 years would be pretty awesome.

Oh and yes, I fully expect you trying to destroy me now that I'm not in the hot seat anymore

You need to come up with a new plan, Che. I've been sleeping like a baby (what a saying, babies always cry and never sleep when they're supposed to...) ever since I finally had good results. Before that? I had to use sleeping pills quite often. Now I sleep like an older person, I get tired at 10PM and go to bed. I've never done this before, for years I have been up until 1 or 2AM quite regularly, and getting up whenever, sleeping 5 to 6 hours a day. Now, I sleep 8 to 9 hours, and evening news is my final call to bed. I definitely don't play video games or watch movies late at night. So you need a new strategy, the sleep deprivation isn't working!

                    • You know, I never understood that expression about sleeping like a baby? What, you peed and sh*t yourself and kept waking up and crying and screaming? I certainly don't want to sleep like a baby!

But I am glad to hear everything is OK...I have been following your progress although never said anything earlier (or at least I don't think I did)

Did I mention, that some of the non-cancerous tumors are actually more dangerous? The doc said, for example, that the one they first thought I had gives a prognosis for 10 years to live. It's weird. I got the cancer, and get better prognosis. In our language, the non-cancerous ones are called "good-natured tumor" while cancerous are cancer or "bad-natured tumor". But in this case, this is actually better. What a weird world. The first one is 10 years estimate (but you never know), this one is now estimate 20+ (and you never know, maybe longer).

                        • Yeah, unfortunately my oncology is not so good...but they are horrible things, cancers. It's a shadow that hangs over all of us.

We had an inlaw who was diagnosed with prostrate cancer back in the 80s, they gave him a radium implant and he died 20+ years later from other problems, not the cancer. He was in his early 80s I believe when he passed. I guess its just a case by case deal, the chemo/rad people told my sis there's only 1 stat that counts - and thats you. Everyone who gets cancer will get it differently based on their genetic heritage and immune systems, that makes it like fingerprints. Some people go into remission and never see it again...
