I see your point now, Shane. That was very recently released information.

Who is Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan?

Officials say a shooting suspect at Fort Hood has been identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who they say was an Army mental health professional.

WASHINGTON — Military officials say the suspected shooter at Fort Hood was a psychiatrist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for six years before being transferred to the Texas base in July.

The officials had access to Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's military record. They said he received a poor performance evaluation while at Walter Reed.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because military records are confidential.

The Virginia-born soldier was single with no children. He was 39 years old.

Sources told News 8 that Hasan was born in 1970 and is of Jordanian descent.

He is a graduate of Virginia Tech University, where he was a member of the ROTC and earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry in 1997. He received his medical degree from the military's Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., in 2001. At Walter Reed, he did his internship, residency and a fellowship.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison said Hasan was to be deployed to Iraq, and there were indications he did not want to go, ABC's World News reported.

Don't go reading things into everything anyone posts. He is of Mideastern heritage, Jordanian, born in America.
He didn't say anything to warrant your question. He stated a fact.

Thankfully, there were erroneous reports. The officer is still alive, and so is the lone gunman. The other two suspects were just freaked out people.

For security reasons, military people can't have live ammo for their duty (?) weapons, but there are no problem if it's for personal weapons
If you have a duty weapon then you have live ammo, but the only people on a military base who have duty weapons are the MPs and some civilian security types. Everyone else has their weapon and their ammo locked up in an armory if not currently training with it.

As has been stated he was using his personal weapons. Personal weapons and ammo are prohibited on base, but its not like we strip every car going through the gate down looking for contraband. I base like Hood has tens of thousands of people going in and out of it a day, most of the soldiers live off base. The security check does nothing more than ensure your car has the proper tags for access and that your ID is real is indeed you. If you want to smuggle something on base and you normally have access then it is not hard.

Actually, weapons are acceptable. You have to register them.

I've been following this story off and on and a few websites have revealed he may have been harassed for his religion or ethnicity. That doesn't make sense. Who in the hell would harass an army major? Any officers who outrank him wouldn't risk there careers over it and if a grunt was giving him crap him, he could've made his life into a living hell.

Judging by the grammar of his blog postings, and from what I've read about his career (poor evaluations, etc) he actually seems a bit stupid. Does the Army just have very low medical/psychiatric standards? It would seem so.

I think that it was fairly recently that he started showing signs of instability.

Very interesting as it relates to the never ending gun debate. Apparently the military doesn't believe more guns = more safety. Surely if you can trust anyone with guns they would be well trained professionals...

So much for the argument everyone should carry a firearm to deter bad guys.
