  • Even some racists sometimes do the right thing!!

By MELINDA DESLATTE, Associated Press Writer Melinda Deslatte, Associated Press Writer – 48 mins ago

BATON ROUGE, La. – A Louisiana justice of the peace who refuses to marry interracial couples resigned Tuesday, after weeks of calls for his ouster from civil rights groups and several public officials, including the governor.

Keith Bardwell quit with a one-sentence statement to Louisiana Secretary of State Jay Dardenne: "I do hereby resign the office of Justice of the Peace for the Eighth Ward of Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, effective November 3, 2009."

Gov. Bobby Jindal called Bardwell's resignation "long overdue."

Beth Humphrey, who is white, has said she and her now-husband, Terence McKay, who is black, received their marriage license from the parish clerk of court, where they also got a list of people qualified to perform the ceremony. When she called Bardwell's office on Oct. 6 to ask, Humphrey said Bardwell's wife told her that the justice wouldn't sign their marriage license because they were a "mixed couple."

When questioned, Bardwell, who is white, acknowledged he routinely avoids marrying interracial couples because he believes children born to them end up suffering. In interviews, he said he refers the couples to other justices of the peace, who then perform the ceremony, which happened in this case.

"There is a problem with both groups accepting a child from such a marriage," Bardwell said in an October interview with The Associated Press. "I think those children suffer, and I won't help put them through it."

Bardwell didn't return repeated calls Tuesday to comment about his resignation, which followed calls for his removal from officials including Jindal and U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu.

"We're saddened that it took national attention to this issue, which was decided back in 1967 by the Supreme Court, and also that it took public admonishment from other elected leaders in order for him to resign," said Laura Catlett, a lawyer for Humphrey and McKay.

Jindal said Bardwell made the right decision.

"What he did was clearly wrong and this resignation was long overdue," the governor said in a statement.

Landrieu said Bardwell's refusal to marry the couple reflected terribly on the state.

"By resigning ... and ending his embarrassing tenure in office, Justice Bardwell has finally consented to the will of the vast majority of Louisiana citizens and nearly every governmental official in Louisiana ... We are better off without him in public service," she said.

Humphrey and McKay have filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Bardwell. Catlett said the resignation won't stop the lawsuit, which also names Bardwell's wife as a defendant.

"This does not in any way change the fact that he, with his wife's help, discriminated against an interracial couple while he was a public official," Catlett said.

Bardwell was elected in 1975 as justice of the peace in Ponchatoula, La., a town 55 miles north of New Orleans. His term was set to run through 2014, and he had said that even before the flap, he hadn't intended to run for re-election.

Or do you just have the habit of singling me out?

LONDON (Reuters) - Two guardians of Britain's historic Tower of London have been suspended after a female colleague, the first woman warden in their 524-year history, accused them of harassment.

The Tower's 34 Yeoman Warders, commonly known as Beefeaters -- whose ceremonial dress is a distinctive scarlet and gold tunic, white ruff, red stockings and black patent shoes -- appointed Moira Cameron to their ranks in 2007.

Cameron, 44, who beat five men to secure the coveted position, has had her uniform defaced and nasty notes left in her locker, newspapers reported, while one suspect has been cautioned by police for defacing Cameron's entry in the online encyclopedia Wikipedia.

"We can confirm that three Yeoman Warders are under investigation in response to allegations of harassment; two have been suspended," the Tower of London said in a statement.

Scotland Yard said a 56-year-old man had been cautioned over the matter last month under the Communications Act.

"The matter related to inappropriate use of the Internet," a spokesman added.

Beefeaters, believed to have earned their nickname from their daily ration of meat, date from 1485 when King Henry VII formed a bodyguard.

To be eligible to join their ranks, candidates must have a minimum of 22 years' service in Britain's armed forces and have earned medals for long service and good conduct.

Cameron, who is from Argyll in the west of Scotland, joined the army in June 1985.

The Tower said an internal investigation had begun to see whether her allegations have any foundation and should conclude within two to three weeks."

The Tower of London was first built in 1078 by William the Conqueror. Its primary functions were as a fortress, royal palace and a prison, but it has served as a place of execution, an armory, a treasury, a zoo, a mint and -- since 1303 -- the home of the Crown Jewels.

Two local women were involved in unrelated, quirky car crashes. First, Kara Leanne Griffin, 24, of Golden Gate Estates, reportedly rear-ended a farm trailer Thursday night.

Then, early Saturday morning, Karen Kittridge, 32, of Marco Island ran into a police car and then proceeded to run into a second police car near Cape Cod, Mass.

Griffin, 24 was arrested at 11:30 p.m., Thursday, and charged with DUI and leaving the scene of an accident.

Witnesses said Griffin rear-ended a farm trailer being pulled by a tractor along 23rd Avenue SW in the Estates. They also said she had nearly hit a pedestrian and ran over mailboxes, reports say.

She had a blood alcohol level of .088 percent and told the deputy she drank vodka, smoked crack and had taken Oxycodone, Clonopin, Baklaphine, Lirica, Tegradol, Paxcil, Dilantin and Lamiktal, reports say.

Griffin was groggy, and was taken to NCH North Naples Hospital.

Police in Marion, Mass. are investigating what caused Kittredge, the 32-year-old Marco woman, to crash into two cop cars Saturday morning as she drove through a coastal area north of New Bedford, Mass.

She was driving her 2008 Mercedes on Route 6 in Massachusetts shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday when she crashed into a Marion police cruiser that had its emergency lights flashing, according to a statement released by the Marion Police Department. There were no police officers in the car, which was on the side of the road, where officers were in the process of talking to a driver who had been pulled over.

The police cruiser was struck and pushed into the center of the road and sustained significant damage, according to police, who reported that Kittredge then hit a second police car, which also had its emergency lights flashing, and was parked on the side of the road while its driver assisted the other officer. The report said the police vehicle was pushed into the fast lane and sustained moderate damage.

                Kittredge’s Mercedes was heavily damaged.

The vehicle that had already been pulled over was not struck and no one other than Kittredge, whose injuries were not life threatening, was hurt in the crashes, police reported. Kittredge was taken to Tobey Hospital and has since been released.

Police officers Jeffrey Tripp and Anthony DiCarlo were not hurt as both were out of their cars at the time. Route 6 was closed in both directions for about one hour.

Sgt. Marshall Sadeck, who is leading the investigation, said neither alcohol nor drugs appeared to be a factor. The Cape Cod crash is still under investigation and details of the potential cause of the accident could not yet be released as of print time.

Kittredge was charged Monday with negligent operation of a motor vehicle. She has no driving record in Collier or Lee Counties.

SCRANTON — An area priest has been removed from his duties after church officials say he accidentally displayed inappropriate pictures from his computer before Sunday Mass.

The Diocese of Scranton said the Rev. Edward Lyman was using his computer on Oct. 25 to project an informational DVD about the annual diocesan fundraiser when four photos were displayed. They featured what church officials describe as “minimally attired adult males.”

Diocese spokesman William Genello said the photos were not pornographic, did not include minors and were not taken by the priest.

Lyman has been removed as administrator of St. Anthony, St. Bridget and St. John the Baptist parishes in Throop. The diocese would not say where he is.
