      • i went to the rio short film festival this weekend. saw quite a lot of films, some good, some bad and some indifferent. one of the better ones was an italian film about some guys from sardinia who signed up for the italian army and found themselves in kosovo. i was very struck by the charming song which played during the final scene.

        • A day for divas. Well, if it's a big gay homo posting, any day is a day for divas, I suppose.

          The question is, why hasn't Marianne Faithfull covered this song ? Who knows...

            • I tried to find footage of her singing 'Tupelo Honey'. No deal so far. Hope this compensates (I'm more used to the Isaac Hayes version, but this is smokin'....):

                • From a wee Scots lassie to a Scottish lament. This makes my spine tingle, even now years after I first heard it.

                  O'er Coolin's face the night is creeping,
                  The banshee's wail is round us sweeping;
                  Blue eyes in Duin are dim with weeping,
                  Since thou art gone and ne'er returnest.

                  Chorus
                  No more, no more, no more returning;
                  In peace nor in war is he returning;
                  Till dawns the great day of doom and burning,
                  MacCrimmon is home no more returning.

                  The breeze of the bens is gently blowing;
                  The brooks in the glens are softly flowing;
                  Where boughs their darkest shades are throwing,
                  Birds mourn for thee who ne'er returnest.

                  Chorus

                  Its dirges of woe the sea is sighing,
                  The boat under sail unmov'd is lying;
                  The voice of waves in sadness dying
                  Say, thou art away and ne'er returnest.

                  Chorus

                  We'll see no more MacCrimmon's returning
                  In peace nor in war is he returning
                  Till dawns the great day of woe and burning,
                  For him, there's no more returning.
                  Vive la liberte. Noor Inayat Khan, Dachau.
