  • Isn't "punk" a genre that can mean basically anything nowadays, it's been stretched so thoroughly? I've never met two people who agree on what exactly constitutes "punk."

Back on topic, I'm thinking "A Hard Day's Night" might qualify. C'mon, Guy. You know you like the cowbell on that bad boy. The White Stripes...hmm. They are pretty awesome, but I haven't heard anything of theirs that really qualifies as epic on the same scale as, say, "White Room."

    • Dude, "Seven Nation Army" is pretty damned epic, in all senses of the word.

      • cort haus is the man and knows his stuff the pixies did amazing, groundbreaking stuff. you can hear their influence in so many bands, even today, even bands that sound nothing like them.

at the idea you can talk about 'the best live performances in history'

I'm still having trouble with the thread question. I'm sure I could come up with dozens of songs I like more than Baba O'Riley (and I'm a Who fan). Personal preferences don't make a song "better".

          To me...

          Real Me > Baba O'Riley

          • Hence punk was the foundation of Alternative.

That's precisely what I said, you nincompoop.

And that's why talking about "alternative rock" as somehow less commercial than straight rock is simply a joke. It IS the commercialization of the original protest music that was punk.

Punk is NOT alternative. It is PUNK. They are two separate genres.

            • Saying that you listen to alt rock in order to prove that you're hard or non-"commercial" is ****ing hilarious.

yeah it's all subjective in the end. likewise i could come up with plenty of songs that i consider better than baba o'riley (i don’t much care for the who), even within the fairly narrow confines of what one might call 'classic rock', but i don't see the point.

i will say though that it's far easier to compare recorded music than live shows, for the simple reason that everyone hears the same thing on a cd.

                  That's a very good point.

It's also true that, while you can capture live audio, you can't capture the feel of being in that venue at that time.
