That was also based on federal funding (for... something)... but in the last few years either it was delinked or it didn't matter as most states have higher speed limits.

Wow, I am truly surprised by that.

21 to drink. At what age can you join the army and kill people?

IIRC, you can join the military at 17.

You should be able to show a note from home at your local bar as well.

Though, seriously, of course they are two different issues. The 21 age limit is a public safety issue (personally, I'd let the states decide without any federal penalties and want it at 18, regardless).

Looks like I spoke too soon as there seems to be no mention of that here:

The basic qualifications for enlistment in the U.S. Army include:

                  • being from 17 to 34 years old
                  • be a U.S. citizen or resident alien, (must have the I-551)
                  • have a high school diploma or equivalent (such as a GED)
                  • be single with no children or married with 2 or less children
                  • pass the ASVAB test and
                  • pass the physical

I'm not sure if I am more surprised by the fact the fed decides this or the fact 21 was the age chosen. I have no doubt this law is broken by a majority of americans.

I'd go with 18 as well (with a "0 tolerance" for new drivers).

                    It's 19 here.

                      Vast majority most like .

Funniest thing I've ever heard was my friend was sitting in the student center at Rutgers as a tour was going around with a bunch of prospective students and their parents and the tour guide told the parents that the fraternities all check ID

Thanks, wasn't 100% sure about exactly what the money was for.

It's set by the province, most are 19 but Quebec is 18.

Yeah, but they have to deal with the Quebecois, so it balances out.

Of course we let provinces decide.

That would be the reasonable approach.

The rest of us have to put up with their constant whining, which justifies an even lower drinking age.

So did Teh Raygun. And the states made a reasonable "choice".
