No one has to let police into their homes unwarranted. Whether they be well appointed manses or shacks in the mountains....that is a civil freedom we all share....

That seems like a poor way to handle the police investigating a reported break in. However since the man is your hero, let's do him the favor of assuming that his account of the incident is 100% correct. Why in your opinion did he hand all of the power he had in that situation over to what he describes as an obviously racist cop? If he had handled the situation in a more rational manner, his dignity would have been preserved and we would have never have heard of this incident. Or would that have been too Stepin Fetchit for a well respected academic like Gates to stomach?

Why are you so intent on criticizing Gates' actions? He was NOT the public servant on duty in this instance. He's a private citizen in his own home. A private citizen being a dick isn't something that the public should really worry about. Police officers arresting people for no good reason is.

You're missing the point. Citizens act stupidly all the time, especially in pressure situations, such a being confronted with a cop.

It is the officer's job to take charge of situations to make sure they don't get out of control. Here, the alleged victim ended up in handcuffs, under arrest. The cop handled the situation is such a way that it went out of control. He failed to do his job. He was stupid. Fact!
