  • My interpretation is perfectly logical. The Republican Party of today is directly descended from the Republican Party of the 1860's; it's the same party. The Republican Party is nothing like the Conservative Party of Canada, for instance, which shares a name with the Conservative Party of the late 19th century but is actually a new and different party.

Yes, it is. And Fun's comment makes sense within context. Although reading back I now see there was no point to his comment so I'll leave it there.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

Because I wanted to point out that the Republican party began losing interest in social issues regarding race and justice by the 1870s and turned its focus on big business and aggressive foreign policy later.

I did not mean to claim that as a result, the Republican party today would support slavery. Geez.
A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.

The republicans did not lose faith in social issues. The democrats were never the party of racial equality until LBJ. Nowadays, the republican party merely does not support affirmative action. A very strong logical case can be made that affirmative action itself is actually racist. Additionally, Republicans never supported agressive foreign policy until Reagan because Jimmy Carter spent his entire presidency being a goddamned *****.

Also you should note that in my post I actually admitted that political ideologies have shifted over the years and that the shifts (in my opinion) are irrelevant.

They didn't support civil rights either and Gingrich lends credence that they still don't.

Dixiecrats didn't support civil rights. After the civil rights movement, the Dixiecrats decided to become Republicans. There is not a single Republican whose opinion matters that thinks civil rights should not be supported.

                  • There is a significant number of Republicans whose opinion DOES matter, who clearly oppose civil rights protection for gays.

Now that Strom Thurmond (former Dixiecrat) is dead, I'm fairly sure there isn't an openly racist republican in any federal elected office. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

I'm talking about racial equality, not homophobia.

We are talking about civil rights, which includes all different groups of people, including gays.

What does the idea of openness have to do with lying politicians?

And once Robert Byrd is gone, there won't be any openly racist politicians left in Congress.
