The state legislature or executive has to ask for the federal government's help. Which, as for as I know, didn't happen here.

        End threadjack.

You think the Republican party of today is the same party it was in the 1850s - 1860s?
A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.

Of course it is. Do you know of some break in the history of the Republican Party that no one else knows about?

              • They were a leftist party then and a rightist party now so they've certainly changed their position substantially.

                  • The re-alignment election of 1896 saw a dramatic shift within the Republican party. Earlier, during the 1870s, a growing number of Republicans lost interest in social issues such as those concerning race, but it was in the election of 1896 that the change became more pronounced/permanent. It was in 1896 that with Republican William McKinley, that the Republican party generally became the party of big business and a more aggressive foreign policy.

                    • A shift in ideological focus doesn't mean it's not the same political party anymore, you idiot.

                      • Alright, Mr. Ad-Hominem. I should have said "different ideological focus" instead of "different political party."

                        • Yes. You should then have tried to demonstrate why this different ideological focus makes you think the Republican Party would now support slavery.

                          • I don't think the Republican party today would support slavery. Who the **** would? First you pulled out an ad-hominem, and now a strawman.

                            • Your original statement was in response to someone rightly pointing out that the Republican Party ended slavery in America. If you didn't disagree with that statement, why did you feel the need to claim that today's Republican party is "a different party" from the Republican party of 1865?

I know what you're saying but you still look like a ****** if you think "same" can't describe a change in ideological focus as well as a break in the lineage of an institution. By your strict interpretation I could say that it's not the "same" because they have more senators and representatives now than then.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned
