Why is Snape a 1/2 Blood Prince? Also, who is RAB?

      Spoiler:
Regulus Archibald Black. Sirius Black's brother which is spoken about in the books but which in the movies the director cut out. Just like he cut out most of the important stuff which set up for the final book. The man needs to be hung for ruining what was an excellent book.

Regulus Black followed the old racist teachings of his parents which Sirius Black rebelled against and joined the death eaters but later had second thoughts and tried to destroy one of Voldimort's horicruxes before getting himself killed. There are a ton of great little threads binding the whole series together which some how didn't make it into the movies. The movies just removed all the foreshadowing and most of the detail of the plot line which was actually very rich, detailed, and believable.

Oh, and Snape's father was a muggle while his mother was a pure blood witch with the surname Prince (detailed in the book) so he was "half a prince". Snape, when he was younger, tried to play up his pure blood side to get in good with his future death eater friends.

The level of detail and foreshadowing in the book is just amazing and covers at least two generations thus helping to explain much of the dynamic you actually see at Hogwarts. I would expect the movies to remove some of it for time reasons but they whole sale eliminated some of the most key social interactions in the whole damn series.

                Spoiler:
I believe RAB's name is actually Regulus Arcturus Black. Not Archibald.

It is a good looking movie and not dull. They should have given one of the villains more than 5 lines. So he (or she) could have been, you know, menacing and stuff.

Who the hell uses spoilers in a thread about a movie adaptation of a book that came out years ago? Isn't the plot by definition spoiled?

No, but you have to have either (a) seen the previous movies; or (b) read the previous books. Rowlings's books kept getting longer and longer making them more and more difficult to make into movies. There's no time for the movie makers to go back and bring noobies up to speed. Especially in the beginning, there's a lot of disconnected scenes as the various subplots from the book are being crammed onto the celluloid.

Given the limitations of making this huge book into a movie, the movie is alright, equal with the others in this series IMHO.

Snape claiming to be the 1/2-Blood Prince was, I agree, stupid. But the irony is that it doesn't matter. The identity of the Half-Blood Prince has minimal impact on the plot. Why Rowlings chose to call the volume of the series by this name is beyond me.

She did because it had huge impact upon why Lily (Harry's mother) rejected Snape as a suitor and instead went with James Potter (Harry's father). Of course, in the books there was a tremendous amount of build up to the whole James-Severus rivalry but this made it absolutely clear why Severus lost out in that love triangle and thus why he hated James (and by extension Harry) so much.

TBH the HP books don't make decent film material. It would have been much better to do them as a series with high production values...LOST type production values, that way the amount of episodes in each series could be adjusted and more air time could have been dedicated to all of hte subplots.
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.
