        Just to make sure there's no misconceptions here, many lodges simply post contact information for a member to whom any schmuck off the street can apply, after which that member (or several) would put the prospect through a short vetting. I suppose you're correct to the extent that those initial contacts would approve the prospect, but they are still strangers; you don't necessarily have to know any member beforehand who would "nominate" you spontaneously.
