For all immigrants (legal and illegal) the incarceration rate was 4-5 times smaller than among native-born Americans (controlling for age and sex). Comparing only Hispanics to Hispanics yields incarceration rates for native-born Americans ~8-9 times larger than for immigrants.

I'm pretty surprised by this. You'd expect that illegals would be disproportionately male, and aged 16-30. That's a pretty criminally inclined demographic group. Maybe there's a tendency for the criminally inclined ones to stay home (where law enforcement is less professional), and the hard-working types to look to America for their fortunes.

If the incarceration rates really reflect actual criminality, I'd say the best explanation would be the much higher deterrent effect, since most illegals fear deportation far more than citizens fear a short prison sentence.

That deterrent wouldn't apply to anchor babies reaching that age group, however. I'd love to see their statistics some time.

But the fact that illegals get medical regardless of status is unsettling, not wrong just unsettling. It means that regardless if they can pay or even belong in the US they can still survive.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but it sounds like you're saying that you'd prefer to see Emergency Departments say, in effect, "**** you, you're illegal, go die on the street.".
