Japan is the only nation in the world that has actually had to endure an atrocity such as an nuclear attack. You are underestimatin the effect this has on Japanese public opinion. Also Japan is still not very militarised due to the legacy of WW2 if I remember right their ministry of defence is only a few years old (though it has de facto existed for decades).

Also why would a nuclear Japan be more unacceptable than a nuclear Great Britain or France? Isn't Japan an ally of the US? And why is a democracy having nuclear weapons more acceptable than a country such as China or Pakistan having nukes?

Also just because NK has nukes this dosen't mean the entire region will rush to get them. Look at Israel and its effect on the ME.

Also Japan is almost a defacto nuclear state, I think if they needed them they could get them built in a matter of months.

They have the 24th largest army in the world with a budget of over 40 billion.

You are the one neglecting the power of history here. I personally wouldn't care but the region itself might.

Japan is like worse than Hitler's Germany as far as many of the neighboring nations feel.

The PRC would go nuts about a nuclear Japan.

That said, it's not going to happen as long as they're under our umbrella.
