But if you're getting paid for your writing (trade journals, magazines, Web, etc.), the universal standard is one space.
From what I've seen, lawyers most often use two.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

"Hating America is something best left to Mobius. He is an expert Yank hater.
He also hates Texans and Australians, he does diversify." ~ Braindead
2 spaces! No way! That's simply a waste of space. Children in third world countries don't have that kind of space, so it would be wrong of me to waste it in such a way. One space if sufficient to make it easy on the eyes.
Who the hell does two spaces after the end of a sentence? I am an English teacher, and I have never heard of that before. That's like bad punctuation like doing ?!?!?!?!?!? for serious things. Even in my writing; reports, essay's, and books, I always use one because one is right.
