In what context is the "n" word appropriate?

I don't see why the word is so offensive to Americans. Gawd isn't it in its origins a word describing the appearance of Africans? (similar to the word Blacks) Sure it can be used as ethnic slur but there is a huge list of such words. Its no more or less offensive than other similar words.

Hera: Given our nation's checkered past, racist slurs of any kind are a big no-no over here. Asians still object to "jap," "chink," "gook," "chow," and any others I can't think of ATM. Latinos get pissed when people call them "wetback," "spic," or whatever. And blacks probably get just as POed when people call them "darkies" or "coons" as when they use the more common "******." But "******" is the most common by far, so it gets singled out. "Redneck" is not a racial slur but a classist slur, and therefore acceptable. Anti-white slurs in general don't raise hackles quite as much either, since we honkies have no reason to be insecure, we still control most everything.

Also, in England, 'Queer', 'Gay' and '****' are likely to be used as terms of abuse toward homosexuals but all are valid words with other meanings. Where do you stop?
