The last one was Chester A Arthur, who had been Garfield's vice, gained office on Garfield's death. He wanted to run for re-election, the Repubs laughed him off. Not sure of the dates, but about 120 years ago.

As to Obama's renomination, only the Slowws and Dinos think he isn't doing well enough right now. The Republicans are in the 30th percentile in current support. What can they do to do better? Stop making themselves look worse, for one thing. Throwing tantrums, stamping their feet, screaming "Socialist" or Communist" are not working for them. Voting NO! is not a way to appeal to most Americans.

The only thing that can swing the political pendulum back to the repugs favor is some type of disaster.
Things have been going so badly that (even being a repug) I'd prefer that Dems keep power for awhile because I don't think the US can survive many more disasters.

All that stamping and tantrums are only effective if the disaster happens because then they can say I told you so and blame it all on Obama whether it's his fault or not.

For that matter, who will the Republicans nominate?

Our politics are closer than you think, Sloww, but it isn't obvious, and the Repub nominee will be a footnote in history -- an also-ran.

Approaching retirement, I really would like to see things get better instead of worse. So I'm hoping the dems work it out, despite my normal bias in this area.

Exactly why I'm not hoping for more disasters just so the Repugs can get back into power.

You already have at least 2 and I haven't even bothered to mention that Obama is making Bush look like a fiscal conservative with his spending.

                    *sigh*

But I may start rooting for universal health care.

Who's gonna pay for it? Obama is also apparently afraid that won't pass as well if he doesn't rush it through: http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/...a-health_N.htm

Which is why I've didn't support it in the past.

But now, inching up to retirement I might be able to be on the + side of this one. Talk about self interest.

Maybe Sloww is implying that Obama won't be around to run 2012

Besides, who are the Repugs going to put up against him? Palin?? Romney???
