Faraday was wrong. He ended up telling young Charlotte never to come back to the Island, even though he swore to himself he wouldn't. If ever there were something that could have been changed, that would've been it.

Again I agree that's broadly what he meant but there's some supposition - most of the losties are still trapped in the 70s. Not sure how the bomb is going to blow them back to the 'present' without changing anything.
How would the Past Chosen travelling to 2007 change anything? As far as we know, that is what always happened; some people from the future in 1977 detonated Jughead in the middle of the mother of all elecrtomagnetic fields, and they all vanished. There's no evidence they ever continued on into 1978, 1979, etc. It wouldn't change a thing; whatever happened, happened; they always whooshed back to the future (or present, depending on your perspective).

    Yeah.

Of course, my supposition that Jacob's Chosen who are in the past (Jack, Kate, Hugo, Sayid, James, Jin) will whoosh back to join those in the present (Sun, Ilana) leaves a few questions regarding other characters.

Whither Miles? Will he remain in the 70s, or will he whoosh to 2007? Or, possibly, 2004, as he missed 2004-2007 entirely? (As did James, Jin, and Juliet.) If he remains in the 70s, does he die in the blast? Will we ever even know?

Likewise for Juliet. I've already made my theory about Juliet and the outrigger shoot-out, so I'll let that stand. I think she is definitely dead, but we'll see her in her past/our present in 2007 during the shootout.

Whither Desmond? Hawking implied he still had work to do, but he was not chosen by Jacob (as far as we know). Plus, his last scene with Penny provided some measure of closure. Add in the actor's legal issues, and his story might be done. Which would suck, on one hand, because the character is awesome. But, I'd rather he have a happy ending than get sucked back into Island craziness and risk everything. Plus, he wasn't in Season One, and the Lost mirror theory (1=6, 2=5, 3=4 with the third season finale "Through the Looking Glass" being the mirror point) would suggest he plays no role in the final season either.

On the other hand, we're not done with Charles Widmore by any stretch of the imagination--if I remember correctly, he's supposed to be a series regular for the last season (as is Christian Shepherd). Hard to see how he could be included, but not his son-in-law and daughter.

        To your first post:

Again I think you're probably right on both points, but it's too early to say for sure. Jack explicitly is trying to change history with the bomb and believes that the 'accident' was caused by the drilling into the electromagnetic pocket, not the interaction of the bomb with the pocket. In the last episode Miles said what we were all probably screaming at the TV 'you guys cause the accident' but no one replied.

And if history isn't changed by the bomb (i.e. that always happened, as we both believe) the most plausible reason they wouldn't have survived to 1978 etc is that they die in the explosion. Of course that won't happen, and my strong expectation is that they do end up back in 2007. I'm just not sure what explanation will be given!

Same explanation of how they whooshed off Ajira 316 into 1977: none at all/Island magic/Jacob did it.

Yeah but that is an explanation - Jacob did it because he needed them in 1977. Not sure why they whoosh back to 2007 for anything other than convenience and tieing up the story.

They reversed shield polarity and the quantum fluxinator bisected the arc of the islands time portal suspending the characters in subspace until released by the death of Jacob.[sci-fi fans' explanation]

              Or

It just did, alright. [literary explanation]

              I prefer the latter explanation.

Jacob did it again, because now he needs them in 2007. "They're coming."

He needed them in 1977 to create the Incident, which would eventually bring them to the Island in the first place (from the Chosen's perspectives), where he needs them to "end things" and prove the Other wrong/defeat him.

Knowing Lost, they haven't written the next episode yet, let alone an explanation for it.
I can see a blackboard with 2 sentences on it that describes how the show ends, and everything else in between a big cloud of nothing that will be filled in when it's needed.

I think that was true for some earlier series, but the last two seem to have been building towards an end with mostly planned core elements. I think it's pretty much mapped out now.

They may have a thin outline, but I'm sure it hasn't been fleshed out yet. Case in point how they left certain characters open ended due to potential drop outs or contract issues. At this late stage I doubt if one of the main characters quit that they would replace him with another actor. They'd just change the story.

And I'll agree that the first couple of seasons were made up as they went along.
