Drake: Well... yeah, I suppose it depends on how you define "supernatural". It is certainly not anything described in current scientific literature, though.

They've definitely hinted that it's something mechanical with clearly defined abilities. Jacob (and his nemesis) seem to be the supernatural entities on the Island.

How does something mechanical scan someone's thoughts and emotions and play it back to them?

Smokey is like a mega-MRI from the future?

MRIs can't scan thoughts and emotions. It's obviously some other form of technology...

I had a thought driving home from Grand Rounds this morning. Don't know why this flew into my head, but stay with me:

Remember the outrigger shootout, when Real Locke and crew were bouncing through time? Locke's gang grabbed an outrigger with an Ajira water bottle from their original camp, which was in a considerable state of disrepair. Soon after, they were being fired upon by a mystery group in another outrigger. Our heroes fired back, and someone (can't remember if it was Sawyer or Juliet) capped one of them.

The immediate speculation was that the mystery crew was the Oceanic Six, which didn't make sense as the O6 isn't exactly a shoot-first, ask-questions-later group. Then, people thought it was Ilana and her "Shadow" team. But it now appears that they are on the side of the angels, so again that doesn't make sense.

How about this: following the Big Boom, the Dharma crew zips back to 2007, and heads to their beach. Sawyer, still grief-stricken, sees himself and the others steal the one boat, and thinks: if I can stop Locke from turning the wheel, we won't go back to 1977, and Juliet won't get blown the **** up. So he comes up with some story to the rest of the Dharma crew, hops into the other boat, and tries to shoot Locke. And gets his ass shot (and possibly killed) by his own self (or Juliet, can't remember). And once again we see whatever happened, happened.

So, the identity of the four-toed statue has been revealed...

Seems appropriate given some of the themes of the show, but I think they were a little misleading with the appearance of the statue...

Ah, I'll believe that is the official word when Lindelhof or Cuse says so. Network recaps have been wrong in the past.

Still, I'm fine with Taweret. Fits thematically.

It's official. There was a separate puzzle in the recent J.J. Abrams-edited edition of Wired that revealed the statue's identity.

I caught up with Lost this week, watching all of season 5. I think it was one of the strongest seasons - the story moved along at a good pace, introducing and solving several mysteries even though it was only 17 episodes. It really seems to be picking up pace now that the flashback/flash forward sequences are playing a smaller role.

I can see why some people hate it but it's pretty unique with some interesting characters and I think it's pretty unmissable. Can't wait for season 6.

                        Random thoughts on plot:

I really hope the bomb doesn't change 'the future' (as in the events we've witnessed in later time periods). It just seems inconsistent with the rest of the show, particularly the time jumps in season 5 (where everything always turned out the way it did originally, even when it seemed it might not). The weakest bit of the season for me was Faraday's constants and variables speech.

It seems a bit of a plothole that Dharma disintegrates so slowly between 1980 (after the accident) and 1990 or so when Ben helps the Others kill them. The Hanzo foundation clearly takes it really seriously in the 70s. I hope they fill this gap a bit.

Why can't Widmore get back to the island? It seems it can be found using Eloise's device, and Widmore's team found it (either through that or independently).

Isn't that an issue of "penance" with the island after he was cast off the island?
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

Possibly. But he's said a lot of times that he can't get back, with the implication being that he can't physically get back not that he could get back but the island would exact vengeance on him. Unless the punishment stops him physically returning, but that doesn't seem in the island's style.

Well, one half of the Island entity threatened Ben's life if he betrayed it, and the other half was killed by Ben.

Given that track record, I'm not surprised Widmore thinks he "can't go back".

A few questions linger for me--did Hawking know that Locke's identity would be hijacked by the Dark One/Other/Adams From 'Deadwood'? She pushed for his body to be on the plane pretty hard. Or was she in league with Ilana and her "Shadow of the Statue" crew, who took the corpse to Richard? Baffling.

They didn't change history. Whatever happened, happened. Dead is dead. They didn't change ****. They brought Ethan Rom into the world; they caused Dharma to evacuate the women and children, estranging Miles from Chang; they caused the Incident, setting the whole ****storm into motion.

"They're coming." Jacob's dying words, telling the Other that Jacob's (literally) hand-picked alpha force (Jack, Kate, James, Hugo, Sayid, Jin, Sun, Ilana) are reuniting in 2007 and going to "end things." ("It only ends once; everything before that is progress.")

This show kicks so much ass.

I think that's right but it's far from confirmed. Jack's stated objective with the bomb was to rewrite history (and it seems Faraday believed that was possible)

Again I agree that's broadly what he meant but there's some supposition - most of the losties are still trapped in the 70s. Not sure how the bomb is going to blow them back to the 'present' without changing anything.
