The problem is that they need TAs. Profs don't want to do the work themselves. Fortunately all my classes are taught by professors, but we do have TAs for discussion groups and labs. There is one who is phenomenally rude and nasty. She berates and threatens students who come in late or don't answer her questions. She gets tons of complaints and has been reprimanded, but she still works, because they need TAs.

Profs are phenomenally underpaid relative to others with their ability, knowledge and experience. Having a light workload in what is, honestly, phenomenally boring work, is one of the compensations that allow universities to continue paying their profs ****.

All lectures at Hopkins are taught by profs. TAs teach discussion groups and do gradework, as well as providing some tutoring services.
